Melissa (Bellemore) Mayo-Smith, Women’s Track & Field, Class of 2007
From 2003 through 2007, the annotation of champion is next to Melissa (Bellemore) Mayo-Smith’s name in the results history of the New England Alliance/Little East Conference indoor and outdoor track & field championships 23 times.  With her dominant performances in the long jump, 55-meter hurdles, triple jump, 55-meter dash and most decisively the pole vault, Mayo-Smith was part of numerous Little East Conference and Alliance championship teams that helped Huskies women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams to more than two decades of trophy lifting.

Although her outstanding performances at the conference and regional level are noteworthy on their own, Mayo-Smith earned the distinction of becoming the women’s indoor track & field team’s first All-American in 2006. Claiming the title of All-American in the pole vault, Mayo-Smith put together a history making 2005-2006 indoor track & field season, taking the top podium spot at the Little East Conference Championship and the New England Alliance Championship in the 55m hurdles, long jump and pole vault.  She followed that performance with All-Region honors at the New England Division III Championships in the same three events before claiming the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III title in the pole vault.

Mayo-Smith completed her standout season at the NCAA Division III National Championships competing at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.  The Huskies’ standout cleared 3.55 meters (11-7 ¾) on her second pass to finish seventh among the 15 qualified competitors to earn the All-American honor.

Distinguishing herself as one of the top track & field student-athletes in program history, Mayo-Smith, completed her degree in Psychology in 2008.  She went on to earn her Master’s degree in School Counseling from Rivier University in 2011.  Currently a stay-at-home mother to twin three-year-old girls, Mayo-Smith was a Mental Health Counselor with Riverbend Community Health.  She was also a volunteer track & field coach at her former high school for three years.
