The Student-Athlete Experience

As an NCAA Division III member institution, Huskies’ athletics places the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students’ academic programs. USM Athletics seeks  to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s athletics activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience. USM Athletics achieves this through the five key developmental areas: Academic Achievement, Athletic Performance, Personal Development, Career Development and Service to Community.

USM student-athletes succeed in the classroom and in competition as evidenced by the numerous academic honors earned by its student-athletes each year, most recently highlighted by two-time Elite 90 recipient and 2017 first team Academic All-American Daniel Del Gallo (wrestling), and 2017 Academic All-American Mary Caron (softball) . Each year USM Athletics recognizes its student-athletes who have achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher with its annual William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete. A record 260 student-athletes achieved this honor for the 2023-2024 academic year.

A History of Success

Ten different Huskies varsity teams and many individual performers have participated in national championship competitions, highlighted by Huskies' baseball teams that captured National Championship honors in 1991 and 1997. In addition, the women's basketball team holds the NCAA Division III record for the longest streak of consecutive 20-win seasons (30) and has competed in the NCAA Final Four five times, men’s track and field athlete Jamie Ruginski completed his career as a four-time National Champion, wrestler Dan Del Gallo captured a national championship in 2017, and track and field standout Peyton Dostie was the 2015 NCAA Division III National Champion Pentathlete.  More recent success includes three additional individual national championship titles since 2020. Sophia Slovenski of the women's track and field team won the 2021 title in the javelin while men's track and field athlete Ben Drummey claimed back-to-back national championships titles in the indoor pole vault in 2022 and 2023.

A majority of the Huskies' teams compete in the Little East Conference, recognized as one of the most competitive Division III conferences in the nation. The wrestling program participates in the New England Wrestling Association and has been one of the top teams in the region. Southern Maine teams have won 130 LEC championships led by a combined 48 between the women's indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
