Jonathan Lounsbury, Ice Hockey, Class of 2012

The 2005 recipient of the Athletic Department’s Roland Wirths’ Memorial Award, Jon Lounsbury was a four-year member and four-time all-star defensemen for the Huskies, who after his playing days in Gorham came to an end went on to play in 250 professional hockey games with various organizations.

A member of Southern Maine’s team from 2001 through 2005, Lounsbury made an immediate impact earning 2001-02 ECAC All-Rookie honors, and then went on to earn All-ECAC honors the next three seasons, including first team accolades in his final season (2004-2005).  A two-year captain (2003-2004, 2004-2005), Lounsbury earned his most prestigious honors in his senior season, named to the All-New England team, and earning American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) second-team All-American honors – just the second USM men’s ice hockey player to earn the coveted distinction.

While anchoring the Huskies’ defense, Lounsbury made his mark offensively and is the all-time leading scorer among defensemen, with 97 points in his career, 30 in a season and five in a game.  Lounsbury also holds the career, single-season and single-game records for assists by a defenseman with 68, 23, and five respectively.  Lounsbury’s 68 career assists are tied for the overall career record in Husky hockey record books.

After his professional playing career, which took him to stops with the Fort Worth Brahmas, Huntsville Havoc (where he was named the 2007 Defenseman of the Year) and the Colorado Eagles, Lounsbury completed his bachelor’s degree in Communication from Southern Maine.  Lounsbury is the head coach and general manager of the Walpole Express, and co-owner of the Girls’ Hockey Program.
