Molly Carl, Class of 2013, Cross Country, Track & Field
A highly accomplished student-athlete as a member of the women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field, Molly Carl won numerous individual and team championships, and a variety of academic and athletic awards during time at Southern Maine.

A Little East Conference Champion, NCAA Division III All-American and Academic All-American as a member of the cross country team, Carl was the LEC Runner of the Year in 2013 and a two-time NCAA Division III National Championship qualifier. Placing 11th in an exceptionally competitive field of 353 runners at the 2011 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship, Carl became just the sixth Husky women’s cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Earning All-New England status in that race, Carl covered the 6000-meter course in 21 minutes, 42.15 seconds. At the NCAA Championship hosted in Wisconsin, Carl became just the second member of the USM women’s cross country team to earn All-America honors finishing 27th overall. Competing in the elite field that included 277 finishers, Carl completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:35.48.  Running in the lead pack, she covered the first mile in 5:35 to settle in the 25th position.  Carl went through the two-mile mark in 29th place at 11:27, and picked up three positions by the three-mile mark with a split time of 17:20.  Carl was the seventh finisher among the athletes representing schools from the New England Region.

An LEC Champion in the mile and 3000-meters as a member of the indoor track & field team, Carl qualified for the mile at the NCAA Division III Championship in 2012, and was named the conference’s Track Athlete of the Year.  As a member of the outdoor track & field team, Carl, a 2012 Academic All-American, claimed LEC championships in the 1500 meters and 5000 meters. Qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championship, Carl became (at the time) the fifth USM competitor to earn All-American honors in outdoor track & field in record setting fashion, placing sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, covering the event in 10 minutes, 40.67 seconds to break her own former school record by more than eight seconds.
