GORHAM, Maine – After a dominant 2-0 week, and the first Little East Conference weekly honor of her career, freshman
Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' softball team has been named the Maine College Baseball & Softball Association (MCBSA) Pitcher and Rookie of the Week. The recognition marks the third time this season that Coots has been honored from the MCBSA.
Earning wins in both of her appearances for the Huskies, Coots helped Southern Maine to a 3-1 overall record and a 2-0 mark in Little East Conference action with a sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University (2-1, 2-1). Coots had an outstanding 1.70 earned run average in 12.1 innings of work. Pitching 5.1 innings in a 6-3 win over Saint Joseph's College, Coots allowed a pair of earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six. In an outstanding performance against Eastern Connecticut, Coots was dominant holding the Warriors to just three hits and a walk for one earned run. In a dominant performance, Coots retired eight batters via strikeout and did not give up an extra base hit. In the final three innings of the contest, Coots sat the Eastern hitters in order from the fifth through seventh innings, picking up three of her eight strikeouts while protecting a one-run lead.
Southern Maine is on the road for its next two contests, traveling Salem State on Wednesday, April 9 (4:00 pm) and VTSU-Castleton on Saturday, April 12 (12:00 pm). The Huskies return home against LEC opponent Keene State on Tuesday, April 15 (4:00 pm), and remain at home on Thursday, April 17 against non-conference opponent Bowdoin (4:00pm). The Huskies are 3-1 in Little East Conference action.
