Barnes Breaks Shot Put and Discus Records at Monks Invitational

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Zoe Barnes (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) broke her own University of Southern Maine program records in the shot put and discus on Friday at the Monks Track & Field Invitational. She had a mark of 13.49m in the shot put and 45.60m in the discus. Each mark ranks in the top 10 in NCAA Division III this season. Barnes was not the only thrower to win an event as senior Jaigan Boudreau (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) took first in the hammer with a throw of 40.07m and junior Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) won the javelin with a throw of 41.34m. Reitchel also placed first in the pole vault with a mark of 3.35m.
 
Junior Janiah Young (Perkinsville, Vt./Windsor) won a pair of event titles on the track with first place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Young clocked in at 12.72 seconds in the 100 meters and 25.89 seconds in the 200 meters. Juniors Lucy Depolito (North Andover, Mass.) and Alexis Karantza (Westbrook, Maine) also won track events. Depolito placed first in the 10000 meters with a time of 40:52.61 to move into fifth on the program's event leaderboard. Karantza (Westbrook, Maine) won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.64.
 
Track Event Highlights:
  • Sophomore Julia Szewc (Hermon, Maine) placed second behind Depolito in the 10,000 meters at 43:17.82.
  • Sophomore Elise Schultz (Windham, Maine) placed second 1500 meters with a time of 5:48.80.
  • Two Southern Maine freshmen finished in the top five in the 100-meter hurdles. Freshman Saya Breiting-Brown (Portland, Maine/Deering) ran a time of 16.57 seconds to place third and Adria Otash (Berwick, Maine/Noble) finished fifth with a time of 17.04 seconds.
  • Freshman Meghan Przybilla (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and junior AnnMarie Limberger (Vassalboro, Maine/Waterville) placed third and fourth in the 800 meters. Przybilla's time was 2:31.70 and Limberger clocked in at 2:32.15.
  • Sophomore Gwen Catalano (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) finished third in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:45.26.
  • Freshman Mya Austin (Sumner, Maine/Buckfield) finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.63.
  • Freshman Khalysa Hammith (Windham, Maine) placed sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.67 seconds.
  • Breiting-Brown also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.65 seconds.
 
 
 
Field Event Highlights:
  • Junior Autumn Gerry (Winthrop, Maine) and graduate student Olivia Jalbert (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) placed second and third in the high jump. Gerry cleared 1.50m and Jalbert cleared 1.45m. Sophomore Sam Fenley (Harlowton, Mont.) tied for fifth at 1.35m.
  • Boudreau placed second in the shot put with a mark of 12.24m and finished second in the discus as well.
  • Hammith finished second in the long jump with a leap of 4.83m. Fellow freshman Amara Calhum-Flowers (Bethel, Vt./White River Valley) placed fifth with a distance of 4.74m and placed sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 9.78m.
  • Jalbert placed third in the javelin with a mark of 33.16m. Freshman Kate LeBlanc (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and senior Sarah Fecteau (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) also placed in the top 10. LeBlanc finished sixth with a mark of 30.58m while Fecteau placed ninth with a throw of 28.73m.
  • Junior Lilly Carson (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) recorded a throw of 39.56m in the hammer to place third while her classmate Lizzie Asman (Marlborough, Mass./ Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter) placed sixth with a throw of 34.53m.
  • Junior Izze Gray (Berwick, Maine/Noble) placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 9.63m.
 
Up Next:
Two members of the team, senior Heaven Conley (Ogunquit, Maine/Wells) and sophomore Allie Kimball (Winslow, Maine), are scheduled to compete tomorrow at the Southern New Hampshire University Ed Daniels Invitational. The rest of the team will return to action next weekend at the Pine Tree State Classic hosted by Colby College.
