GORHAM, Maine – Five members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' softball team have earned 2023-2024 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors. Earning the academic distinction were seniors
Belle Snyder (Epping, N.H.),
Makena Mulcahy (Auburn, Mass.),
Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.),
Madi Day (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) and sophomore
Olivia Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.).
To be eligible for Academic All-District recognition, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher. They also must have competed in 90 percent or started in 66 percent of their institution's games. For softball pitchers, it is 17 appearances or 25 innings pitched. The 2023-24 Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Both Snyder and Day advanced to the Academic All-America ballot.
Recently named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region First Team short stop, Day has been the Huskies' every day starter at shortstop throughout her career. Hitting .410 (50-for-122) for a career-best performance at the plate for the Huskies, Day drove in a team-leading 26 RBI, adding 11 doubles and a home run, and was named to the All-Little East Conference second team.
Batting third in the Huskies' lineup, Day scored a team-leading 32 runs and has an on-base percentage of .475, drawing a career-best 15 walks in 2024. A standout defensively, Day had 108 assists and 32 putouts and helped turn three double-plays. In the Little East, Day ranks fifth in batting average, 10
th in slugging percentage (.525), seventh in on-base percentage (.475), seventh in OPS (1.000), sixth in runs scored (32), fourth in hits (50), sixth in RBI (26), and ninth in doubles (11). In 158 career games, Day finished with 154 hits, including 36 doubles, two triples and a home run with 76 RBI for a career .310 batting average.
Recently earning her degree in Sport and Esport Management, Day is a three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete and is earning Academic All-District honors for the second time in her career. During the Huskies' Senior Honors Banquet, Day was announced as the 2024 recipient of the Roland Wirths' Memorial Award.
A three-time All-LEC selection, Snyder is now a two-time Academic All-District performer. Earning first team All-Little East honors for the second time in her career, repeating the accolade as a utility player in 2022 and 2024. In 2023, Snyder earned second team recognition as a pitcher. Splitting time as a starting pitcher and outfielder, and spot playing as a designated player, Snyder had 20 appearances in the circle for Southern Maine with 16 starts. Finishing with a 9-4 record, Snyder fired 78.2 innings and held her opponents to a .256 batting average. In a 5-0 win over St. Scholastic, Snyder set a career-best mark with 12 strikeouts against St. Scholastica. Finishing the season with a .304 batting average, Snyder collected 34 hits in 112 at-bats, with seven RBI and 20 runs scored. With four doubles and one home run to her credit in 2024, Snyder's home run in the Huskies' 5-4 walk-off win against UMass Boston was the first of her career. Snyder finishing her career with a .313 average with 104 career hits, including four doubles, two triples and a home run with 20 career RBI. In the circle, Snyder is 28-19 with four saves and a career 2.97 earned run average and a total of 275 strikeouts.
Completing her degree in Linguistics, Snyder is a three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, a LEC All-Academic team performer, and was named to the NFCA's Scholar All-American Division III team in 2021.
Also a two-time Academic All-District selection, Mulcahy earned All-LEC honors for the first time in her career after an outstanding 2024 season. A member of the Huskies' outfield, Mulcahy hit a career-best .347 during the season collecting 34 hits in 98 at-bats. Her previous career-high of .265 was set in the 2023 season. Scoring 22 runs and driving in 17, Mulcahy played in 37 games during the season, starting 34, and had eight doubles. Against Little East Conference opponents, Mulcahy hit .412 (14-for-34) with a .451 on-base percentage. A steady presence in the outfield, Mulcahy had 44 putouts and three assists primarily in right field. In the Huskies' 7-4 win over RIC to advance to the championship game of the LEC tournament, Mulcahy had four putouts, including a diving grab to rob an extra-base hit.
Completing her degree in Psychology, Mulcahy is a three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, and an LEC All-Academic Team performer.
A three-time All-Little East Conference selection (2021, 2022, 2023) at first base for the Huskies, Scott hit .275 for the Huskies in 2024, collecting 36 hits in 131 at-bats with 12 doubles and home run, scoring 10 runs and picking up 22 RBI. A standout defensively, Scott had 304 putouts and 14 assists for a .994 fielding percentage. Playing in 157 career games, Scott has 132 hits, including 37 doubles, two triples and six home runs in her career, and has driven in 90 RBI. She is the program record holder for putouts with 1135, and has 35 career assists for a career .994 fielding percentage.
Earning numerous academic and leadership honors throughout her career, Scott is a two-time Paula D. Hodgond Leadership Award recipient (2023, 2024) and a 2023 Kimberly M. Turner Award recipient. A three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, and a 2021 NFCA All-America Division III Scholar Athlete, Scott recently earned her degree in Elementary Education.
Enjoying a tremendous sophomore season, Levasseur played second and third base for the Huskies in 2024, settling into a starting role at third base. Hitting a career-best .330, Levasseur had 38 hits in 115 at bats with seven doubles and a triple, while scoring 24 runs and driving in 20. Drawing 19 walks, Levasseur had a solid .419 on-base percentage for the Huskies. Defensively, Levasseur had 46 putouts and 80 assists over the course of a 41-game season. Pursuing her degree in Criminology and Psychology, Levasseur earned William B. Wise honors in 2023.
