Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. –  After dropping a high-scoring 15-10 game to the Hamilton College Continentals in their opener, the University of Southern Maine Huskies bounced back to defeat the Oberlin College Yeoman in five innings 9-1 to salvage a split Sunday afternoon at the Foundation Academy Fields.

With its 1-1 mark on the day, USM is now 3-1.  Hamilton won its second straight with its win over USM to improve to 3-7, while Oberlin College fell to 0-8 with the loss.

GAME ONE: Hamilton College 15, Southern Maine 10

Ahead 7-0 after the top of the third, USM surrendered a seven-run bottom of the inning and then was outscored 8-3 as the Continentals rallied to earn a 15-10 win over USM.  Freshman Helen Lin (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado) sparked the Hamilton rally in the bottom of the third stroking a solo shot from the lead off spot to put her team on the board.  Hamilton collected its seven runs in the inning on four hits, and took advantage of three Huskies' errors in the inning.

With the score knotted up at seven runs, the Huskies reclaimed the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth as junior Shelby Obert (Norridgewalk, Maine/Skowhegan) cranked out a three-run home run after singles from sophomores Taylor Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.).  It is the first home run of the season for the Huskies' and the first of Obert's USM career.

Southern Maine remained ahead of Hamilton 10-7 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Continental struck for another big innings scoring six runs to take the lead for good.  This time freshman Ursula Castiblanco (Leonia, N.J.) connected for the second Continental homerun of the game driving in two runs.  After Castiblanco's shot, Hamilton swung for three consecutive hits, including a two-run double from freshman Jodi Weiss (Waterford, Conn.).  Hamilton had eight hits in the inning.

Trailing 13-10, the Huskies were held scoreless over their next three innings while Hamilton added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 15-10 final.

GAME TWO: Southern Maine 9, Oberlin 1 (5 innings)

Sophomore Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) scattered three hits and a walk over five innings to earn her second win of the season, while junior Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) went 3-for-3 at the dish with four RBI to lead the Huskies to a 9-1 win over the Yeoman.

Southern Maine took control early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI sacrifice fly from senior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic's Academy) and a two-run double from Crosman.  Oberlin cut into the Huskies' lead with a run in the top of the third on an RBI sacrifice bunt from junior Grace Evans (Arlington, Va./HB Woodlawn).  Evans scored Emily Dowling (Delmar, N.Y./Bethleham Central) who reached safely with a lead off single and advanced to third following a single from classmate Izzy Gonzalez-Velarde (Livermore, Calif./Granada).

Southern Maine bounced back in the bottom of the third with two more runs as Crosman hit her second double of the game to right-center field to drive in Caron who led off the inning with a triple to right field.  Crosman came around to score on a Yeoman fielding error before the inning ended for a 5-1 USM lead.

With Kelly in control in the circle, retiring Oberlin in order in the top of the fourth, Southern Maine was able to invoke the eight-run rule by scoring four more runs in the bottom half of the inning.  After one out, Caron reached on a fielding error and then stole second before touching home plate on Crosman's fourth RBI of the game – a single down the right field line.  Senior Kat McKay (Mechanic Falls, Maine/St. Dominic's Academy) and Lux drove in the final two runs of the game on a pair of singles for the 9-1 Husky advantage. Kelly ended the game retiring the final three batters on a pop up, infield ground out and a line out for the win.

Southern Maine returns to action on Monday against Worcester State (1:00 p.m.) and St. Lawrence (3:00 p.m.).
