Box Score 2 GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Erika Millett (Whitefield, N.H./White Mountains Regional) pitched a strong five-hit, one-run win in the opener to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies split a non-conference doubleheader with the Bowdoin College Polar Bear Wednesday afternoon played at St. Joseph's College.
Both teams saw win-streaks come to an end with the split. Southern Maine earned its seventh straight win with the 9-1 (6 inn.) victory over Bowdoin in the opener only to see it halted in the second game as Bowdoin downed the Huskies 12-4 (5 innings) in the second game. Southern Maine is 14-8 with the split, while Bowdoin is 15-6.
Millett scattered five hits and a walk over six innings to pick up her seventh win of the season. Millett, who struck out four, received solid run support from freshman Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore Allison Pillar (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) who each drove in three runs.
Game One:
Both teams seemed to be settling into a pitching duel after a scoreless three and a half innings. Bowdoin sophomore Alana Luzzio (Groton, Conn./Fitch) kept the Huskies' bats silent through their first three at-bats picking up seven of her eight strikeouts through three innings pitched. Millett was strong on the Huskies side, picking up all four of her strikeouts and benefitting from solid defense to make the score 0-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth.
USM's bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth. The Huskies scored six runs on five hits and a Bowdoin error to score the first runs of the game. The Huskies first three batters reached safely on a walk to Davis and singles from senior Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and freshman Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble). With the bases loaded sophomore Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) flared a hit just over the shortstop's head, but Bowdoin senior Adriane Krul (Ashburnham, Mass./Cushing Academy) threw Davis out at home to keep the score at 0-0.
With the bases still loaded and one out, sophomore Danni Humphrey (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) drew an RBI walk, before Pillar connected on the first of her two doubles of the game to drive in Crosman and Kelly for two RBIs. USM then made it 4-0 on an outfield error to score Humphrey. USM plated its final two runs of the inning on a two-out single to center field from Davis.
Southern Maine made it 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth on Pillar's second double of the game. Again with two outs, Humphrey used a solid at-bat to draw a walk, before Pillar roped a double to left center to bring Humphrey across home plate. Bowdoin ended the inning with a smart defensive play as the Polar Bears snagged Pillar out as she attempted to take third on the throw.
Bowdoin broke up the shut out in the top of the sixth. Junior Julia Geaumont (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) started the rally with a one-out double down the right field line and then advance to third on a single up the middle from junior Katie Gately (Rehoboth, Mass./Moses Brown School). Geaumont came around to score on senior Cielle Collins' (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth) RBI sacrifice fly to right field, before the Huskies ended the inning with a ground out.
Leading 7-1, USM earned the inning-shortened victory in the bottom of the sixth. Following a lead off walk issued to sophomore Emily York (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee), junior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic's) stroked a one-out double to center field to make it first and third for the Huskies. Davis drove in the Huskies' eighth run with a sacrifice fly to left field to plate York, while Caron advanced to third on a throwing error. Duross sealed the 9-1 victory in the Huskies' next at bat with a single up the middle to score Caron.
Luzzio finished the game pitching 5.2 innings in the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and seven walks.
Game Two:
Defensive miscues sunk the Huskies in game two. Southern Maine committed three errors in the top of the first inning to allow Bowdoin to score nine runs, six of which were unearned.
Bowdoin connected on 11 hits in the win led by two hits a piece from Collins, Krul and freshman Claire McCarthy (Mercer Island, Wash./Holy Names Academy), while sophomore Marisa O'Toole (Scarborough, Maine) finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
In the circle Geaumont was strong, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out four. USM's Kelly was tagged with the loss. Kelly allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and two walks. Kelly struck out five.
Southern Maine's Duross was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the loss, while freshman Taylor Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (3:00 p.m.) in a non-conference doubleheader at the University of New England. Bowdoin begins a three-game series with NESCAC opponent Tufts on Friday (4:00 p.m.).
