Southern Maine Scored 27 Runs Over Two Games Sweeping Western New England (11-2) and Lancaster Bible (16-2)

CLERMONT, Fla.  –  Senior Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was 5-for-8 over two games with five runs scored and four RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a pair of high-scoring wins in non-conference softball action.  Southern Maine defeated the Western New England University Golden Bears 11-2 in the opener and then collected 19 hits en route to a 16-2 win over the Lancaster Bible College Chargers.

With the pair of wins Southern Maine extends its win streak to three games and improves its overall record to 7-3.  Western New England fell to 2-4 with the loss to the Huskies, while the Chargers started their season at 1-1. 

In the opener, Husky freshman Erika Millett (Whitefield, N.H./White Mountains Regional) through seven solid innings allowing one earned run on six hits. Millett did not yield a walk in the win and struck out two.  Duross was 2-for-4 against WNEU with a pair of runs batted in.  Freshman Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) continued her strong offensive play collecting a pair of hits, including a double, while driving in three runs.  Sophomore Danni Humphrey (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles to help USM collect 14 hits in the win.

WNEU senior Samantha Mulhern (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) scored both of the Golden Bears runs.  Sophomore Katie Wood (Westport, Mass./Bishop Stang) was WNEU's lone repeat hitter with a solid 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a pair of singles.  Junior Alexis Bukowski (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) was credited with an RBI in the first inning scoring Mulhern with a ground out in the bottom of the first. WNEU senior Lauren Zambrano (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) took the loss.  Zambrano, who struck out four, allowed 14 hits and gave up four walks for 10 earned runs.

Against Lancaster Bible, freshman Amber Kelly limited the Chargers to seven hits over seven innings and gave up one earned run. Kelly, who did not walk a batter, struck out eight.  Duross was the Huskies' offensive catalyst going 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and two RBI, including her first home run of the season in the top of the second. Humphrey continued a strong day at the plate finishing 4-for-5, all singles, scoring three runs and driving in one, while junior Jen Lynch (Porltand, Maine/Deering) was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Lancaster Bible freshman Julia D'Arrigo (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) took the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 19 hits and three walks.  At the plate, D'Arrigo was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and an RBI to lead the Chargers. 

Southern Maine concludes its Florida trip on Tuesday when it faces Endicott College (11:00 a.m.) and Worcester State (1:00 p.m.).
