Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3
DANBURY, Conn. – Senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) fired a complete game win and freshman Danni Humphrey (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) drove in two runs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 win over the Western Connecticut Colonials in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader.  With the win, Southern Maine salvaged the split in the LEC opener.  Western Connecticut edged Southern Maine 4-3 in the first game.

Winners of five of their last six games, the Huskies improve to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference.  With the loss, the Colonials saw their 12-game (11-0-1) unbeaten streak come to an end.  Western Connecticut stands at 16-5-1 and 1-1 in the conference with the split.

Trailing 1-0 after the first, Southern Maine exploded for five runs in the top of the second to spearhead the victory. After a leadoff walk from freshman Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood), a Colonial fielding error and a walk to rookie Samantha DiBiase (South Portland, Maine), Humphrey connected on a two-run double to left field to plate Crosman and junior Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). With a 2-1 lead, the Huskies' took advantage of the Colonials second fielding error of the inning to plate a trio of unearned runs for a 5-1 lead.  With a 5-1 lead, Stockwell settled in and held the Colonials scoreless over their next four at bats.  Stockwell did not yield a hit after the first inning until giving up a single in the top of the fourth. During that stretch, Stockwell struck out four.

USM made it 6-1 in the top of the fifth with an RBI groundout from DiBiase. The Colonials struck for a run in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on a lead off single from Erin Weber and a double from Julia Bocek.  With runners on second and third, Colonials' senior Kylee Ruther (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.  With one down and a runner on third, Stockwell bounced back for two infield outs to close the inning leading 6-2. After a scoreless top of the seventh, the Colonials again took a run with a one-out solo homerun from freshman Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) to make it 6-3.  However, Stockwell closed out the game with a pair of fly outs for the win.

With the win, Stockwell improves to 6-4 on the season. She spread out six hits and two walks over seven innings. She struck out four.  Colonial sophomore Emily Cintorino (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) took the loss falling to 7-2.  She gave up two earned runs on five hits and four walks.

In the first game, Western Connecticut sophomore pitcher Alie Sabith (Meriden, Conn./Maloney) improved to 9-3 spreading out nine hits and two walks over seven innings to allow two earned runs.  Husky rookie Desiree Benner (Friendship, Maine/Medomak Valley) was the hard luck loser pitching a strong game in the loss.  Benner allowed one earned run on eight hits and four walks while fanning five.  Benner was hampered by two Huskies' fielding errors.

The Colonials led 1-0 after the first inning on a RBI single from Michaela Roche and then made it 4-0 in the bottom of the third.  The Colonials used singles from Weber, Bocek, Roche and Maegan Rodgriguez and one error to plate three runs in the third.  Rodgriguez and Boyle each had RBI in the inning.

USM scored runs in the top of the fourth and sixth.  The Huskies' used an RBI single from freshman Emily York (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) in the fourth and a solo home run from Duross in the sixth.  Duross' second home run of the season made it 4-2 in favor of the Colonials.

USM made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh on a back-to-back singles to lead off the inning from junior Lily Cooper (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth) and senior Cara Radino (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional).  With Cooper stealing third, the Huskies had runners on first and third with no outs and Stockwell connected on the Huskies' third single of the inning to plate Cooper, making it 4-3, before Sabith retired the next three Huskies' batters in order including a pair of strikeouts to hold on for the win.
