Southern Maine Falls to Endicott (4-0) and Worcester State (4-1)

CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies dropped a pair of games Thursday falling to Worcester State University Lancers 4-1 in their opener and then dropping the second game of the day 4-0 to the Endicott College Gulls.

With the pair of losses, Southern Maine dips to 2-8 overall.  Worcester State stood at 2-2 with its win over Southern Maine, while Endicott improve to 5-2 with its win over the Huskies.

Scattering five hits over seven innings, Endicott junior Meg Donegan (Atkinson, N.H./Central Catholic) earned her first win of the season.  Donegan limited the Huskies' to five singles and gave up three walks, while striking out four batters. 

Gull senior Alex Moise (North Reading, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while pinch hitter Sam DiBella was 1-for-1 with an RBI to lead a five-hit Endicott attack.  Junior Jess Linden (Stratford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) was 2-for-4 for the Gulls with one run scored. 

Husky senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) allowed one earned one in the loss.  She held Endicott to five hits and yielded three base on balls. She had a season-high six strikeouts in the loss.

Worcester State broke open a close game with three runs in the top of the sixth to defeat the Huskies.  Ahead 1-0 after five innings, the Lancers took advantage of three USM errors in the top of the sixth and a two-run single to right field from junior Taylor Hanley (Wilmington, Mass.) to secure the victory.

Worcester State freshman Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) earned the win in the circle pitching five innings of relief. She scattered four hits and two walks allowing one unearned run.  USM freshman Desiree Benner (Friendship, Maine/Medomak Valley) pitched well in the loss, giving up six hits over seven inning without allowing an earned run.  She struck out seven and walked two. 

Freshman Leanne Reichert (Portland, Maine) drove in the Huskies' lone run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to third base. 

Southern Maine concluded its spring trip to Florida returns to action on Thursday, March 27 (3:00 p.m.) at the University of New England for a non-conference double header.
