Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) threw a six-hit shut out to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win over the Western New England Golden Bears in a non-conference softball game played at Hancock Field in Clermont, Fla. The win helped the Huskies' to a split on the day. USM fell to Wesleyan (Conn.) University 7-4 in the first game of the day.
With the split, Southern Maine stands at 2-6 on the season. Wesleyan improved to 6-4 with the win. Western New England stands at 3-5 with the loss.
In the second, Stockwell scattered six hits over seven innings to earn her second win of the season. She struck out two batters and walked three to improve her record to 2-2. Freshman Samantha DiBiase (South Portland, Maine) drove in one of the Huskies' two runs. Junior Lily Cooper (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth) and freshman Samantha Crossman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) each had doubles.
In the opener, Wesleyan rallied from a 4-3 deficit with four runs in the top of the fourth to take the 7-4 win over the Huskies. Senior Alex Sarkowsky's (Encino, Calif./Archer School) two-run double to left field capped the pivotal inning for the Cardinals. Wesleyan plated its four runs on four hits while taking advantage of a pair of Huskies' errors. Cardinal sophomore hurler Amanda Roosa (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany Central) earned the win, giving up four earned runs on nine hits. She struck out three. Senior Laura Getchell (Raymond, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) earned the save firing one inning of scoreless relief in the seven, yielding one hit and striking out one.
USM freshman Desiree Benner (Friendship, Maine/Medomak Valley) was the hard-luck loser allowing four earned runs on five hits and five walks in 3.2 innings. Stockwell relieved Benner in the fourth, and pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits and striking out two.
Stockwell and junior Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each had two hits for the Huskies. Freshman Emily York (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) was 1-for-3 with three RBI. York helped USM grab a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fist with a three-run double to left-center field.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday against Worcester State (9:00 a.m.) and Endicott (1:00 p.m.).
