Huskies Split Doubleheader With Nor'easters

            GORHAM, Maine  – Senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and a run scored to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a non-conference doubleheader split with the University of New England Nor'easters Tuesday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine.  Southern Maine defeated UNE 8-4 in the opener, while UNE bounced back to take the second game 9-1 in five innings.

            With the split, Southern Maine halted an 11-game losing streak and bumped its record to 2-18.  UNE stands at 12-10.

            Trailing UNE 4-2 headed into the bottom of the fourth inning, Southern Maine exploded for six hits and five runs to grab a 7-4 lead over the Nor'easters.  The Huskies scored all five of their runs with two outs.  Sophomore Lillian Cooper (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth) drove in the first run of the inning with a single through the left side to score senior Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) who led off the inning with a single.  Davis then doubled in a pair of runs, driving the ball to left-center field for team-leading 10th and 11th RBI of the season. Sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) knocked in the final two runs of the inning with a single rocketed up the middle.

            Both teams were scoreless in the fifth.  In the top of the sixth, the Huskies were able to get out of the inning despite having players in scoring position with one out. In the bottom of the sixth, USM added an insurance run on an RBI ground out from Hutchins for an 8-4 lead.  The Huskies' closed out the game in the top of the seventh as USM senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) continued her strong performance, getting the first two batters in order before yielding a single to UNE sophomore Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H./Manchester Central).  With two outs, Stockwell sat down the fourth batter of the inning with a fly out to center field. 

            Stockwell earned the win scattering seven hits and three walks over seven innings.  She allowed three earned runs and struck out a pair of batters.  Freshman Chelsea Damon (Scarborough, Maine) took the loss for UNE.  She allowed five earned runs on seven hits and a walk in 2.2 innings pitched.

            In the second game, UNE jumped on top early scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first on a two-run single from LaRoche.  LaRoche finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI. 

            The Nor'easters added two more runs in the top of the third led by junior Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H./Salem). Vaudreuil had an RBI single through the right side of the Huskies' infield and then came around to score on a wild pitch. 

            In the fifth, UNE plated five more runs.  Vaudreuil had a two-run single in the inning for the Nor'easters to finish the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

            Freshman Lauren Doneski (Waltham, Mass./Matignon) led the Nor'easter to the win.  Doneski limited the Huskies to just two hits in five innings to improve to 6-2 on the season.  USM's Hutchins took the loss allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched. Hutchins gave up four hits and five walks before being lifted for freshman Lauren Haberern (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh).  Haberern pitched the final 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and no runs.

            Southern Maine returns to action Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Bowdoin College.  The University of New England hosts Husson on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.).
