Eagles Sweep Southern Maine 4-2, 15-2 (5 inn)

         BANGOR, Maine  – Freshman Breanna Martin (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) stroked a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Husson University Eagles to a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader to highlight a two-game sweep for Husson, Wednesday evening at the O'Keefe Complex in Bangor, Maine. Husson defeated USM 15-2 (5 innings) in the second game.

         The pair of wins bounced the Eagles back from a two-game slide to improve their overall record to 6-8.  Suffering its seventh consecutive defeat, Southern Maine falls to 1-13 on the season. 

         Trailing 2-1, the Huskies pulled even with the Eagles in the top of the fifth inning following an RBI single from senior captain Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.).  Davis' RBI scored sophomore Lillian Cooper (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth).  Cooper reached safely to lead off the inning on a Husson throwing error and put herself in scoring position with a stolen base.  USM held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom half of the inning before Martin's homer in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win.

         USM senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) pitched well in the loss.  Stockwell scattered seven hits and a walk over six innings allowing four earned runs.  She struck out six batters.  Freshman Lyndsey Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Telstar Regional) earned the win in relief for Husson, firing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Junior Amanda Ryan (Brewer, Maine) pitched 5.2 innings allowing one earned run on eight hits and a walk.

         Husson overcame a 2-0 deficit with 12 runs in the bottom of the second inning to cruise to a five-inning 15-2 win over USM in the second game.  The Eagles pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of four Southern Maine errors.  Sophomore Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, Mass.) led the Eagles with three RBI.  Senior Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine/Sumner Memorial) and sophomore Victoria Overlock (Belfast, Maine) each had two RBI. 

         USM senior Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) and sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each had an RBI for the Huskies. Stockwell was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.

         Freshman Lauren Haberern (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) took the loss for USM. Haberern allowed 10 earned runs on 12 hits and five walks.  Husson sophomore Kayla Merrill (Bethel, Maine/Telstar Regional) earned the win giving up six hits in five innings for two earned runs.

         Southern Maine remains in non-conference play and faces Salem State in a doubleheader on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.). It is the Huskies home opener.  Husson travels to Thomas College on Thursday (4:00 p.m.) for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader.
