Box Score 2 GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass./Woburn), Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) and Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) each came up big to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs on Senior Day at Towers Field Saturday afternoon in Gorham, Maine. Southern Maine took the first game 8-5 and then completed the sweep with a five-inning 9-0 win.
With the sweep, Southern Maine completes its 2013 season with a record of 9-31 overall and 4-10 in the Little East Conference. UMass Dartmouth concludes its season with a record of 11-27 and 3-11 in the conference.
Hutchins earned the win in the opener going the full seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits and a walk. Hutchins had four strikeouts in the victory. Helping out her own cause, Hutchins added an RBI double on a 1-for-2 effort at the plate.
Davis collected her team-leading eighth and ninth doubles of the season in the opener finishing the game 2-for-4 at the dish a pair of RBI and two runs scored. Hayden was 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.
Tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third, USM created some distance from the Corsairs plating four runs on three hits and one Corsairs' error. Davis drove in one of the Huskies' first run with an RBI line out to center field.
UMD battled back with two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the USM lead to 5-3. Jenna Sylvia had a sacrifice fly RBI to left field in the inning, but USM answered back in the home-half of the fourth with three more runs. All three of the Huskies' runs were scored with two outs. Freshman Nicole Nutter (Westbrook, Maine) had a two-out single and then stole second before coming around to score on an RBI single from Hayden. Hayden advanced to second on a wild pitch and Davis doubled her in with a shot to center field, before Davis scored on an error for a 8-3 Huskies' lead.
The Corsairs took a run back in the top of the fifth and the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as USM held for the win. Sophomore Shannon Gregoire (Dartmouth, Mass.) had an RBI in the fifth for the Corsairs, while sophomore Becky Williams (Hope Valley, R.I./Chariho) finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI single to left field for the RBI in the seventh.
UMass Dartmouth freshman Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) took the loss. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits and two walks. She had five strikeouts.
In the second game, USM blew open a 1-0 lead with seven run in the bottom of the third inning to cruise to a 9-0 win over the Corsairs. The Huskies had five of their seven hits in the inning and took advantage of a Corsairs' error, five wild pitches and a passed ball. Sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), Hutchins and senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each had RBIs in the inning.
Stockwell earned the shut out win for USM. She scattered five hits over five innings and did not yield a walk. She had six strikeouts. Freshman Amanda McHugh (North Kingstown, R.I.) took the loss allowing seven runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings pitched. She gave up four hits and had four walks with a strikeout.
