Box Score 2 GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Julia Geaumont (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) threw a one-hitter and received strong run support by means of three home runs in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears swept the University of Southern Maine Huskies 7-1 and 10-1 (5 innings) Wednesday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine.
With the two wins, the Polar Bears halt a three-game slide and improve to 15-9. The pair of losses drops Southern Maine's record to 2-20. Bowdoin now leads the series between the two schools 28-24.
Geaumont fired five strong innings and had a no-hitter going until the fourth inning when she was tagged for a triple from USM senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle). Geaumont improved to 6-1 with the win. She struck out five batters and did not yield a walk.
Bowdoin backed up Geaumont's strong performance, belting out 10 hits including home runs from freshman Katie Gately (Rehoboth, Mass./Moses Brown School), sophomore Siena Mitman (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and junior Casey Correa (Stamford, Conn./King Low Heywood Thomas). Gately had a solo shot over the left field fence for the Polar Bears' first run of the game. Mitman had a two-run blast to center field and Correa had a three-run home run over the left field fence as part of a game-deciding six run top of the fifth.
Stockwell's triple in the fourth led to the Huskies' lone run of the game. After reaching third safely, Stockwell advanced to home on a throwing error before Geaumont bounced make to retire the next three hitters. After Stockwell's hit, Geaumont retired the next six Husky batters in order.
Stockwell took the loss for USM. She allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits and three walks. Stockwell fanned three batters over five innings.
In the first game, Bowdoin opened up a 5-0 lead after the first two innings and cruised for the 7-1 win. Junior Hanna Wurgaft (Montclair, N.J.) was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Polar Bears. Senior Tricia Thibodeau (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picked up her third win of the season to improve to 3-2. Thibodeau allowed one earned run on seven hits and a walk over seven innings.
Stockwell and sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each had a pair of hits for the Huskies in the opener. Senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) was 1-for-3 with an RBI single. USM senior Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) took the loss. She gave up two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. Hutchins struck out four, but was hampered by four USM errors.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference doubleheader. Bowdoin hosts Colby College on Friday (4:00 p.m.) in a NESCAC contest.
