Southern Maine Grabs First Win Over Houghton 10-4; Fall to Oberlin 6-2

         CLERMONT, Fla.  – Senior Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) and freshman Nicole Nutter (Westbrook, Maine) each had a pair of RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to their first win of the season with a 10-4 victory over the Houghton College Highlanders Monday night in Clermont, Fla.  In their second game of the evening, the Huskies fell to the Oberlin College Yeoman 6-2.

         With the split, Southern Maine earned its first win under first-year head coach Sarah Jamo and moved to 1-7 on the season.  Houghton fell to 0-3 with the loss to Southern Maine while the Yeoman halted a four-game slide to improve to 2-6.

         Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the third, USM scored three runs to grab a 4-1 lead over the Highlanders.  Hayden stroked a two-run double to center field to give the Huskies' the lead and sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) accounted for Southern Maine's third run of the inning with a run-scoring single to plate Hayden.

         Tacking another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple from senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) to lead 5-1 through four innings, Houghton closed the gap to 5-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth.  The Highlanders parlayed two hits, two walks and an USM error into a pair of runs.  Houghton freshman Sarah Schwingle (Henrietta, N.Y.) had an RBI ground out, while sophomore Morgan York (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood) had a lead off triple to highlight the inning.

         The Huskies bounced back in the bottom of the fifth closing the door on Houghton with a five-run outburst.  Nutter collected both of her RBI in the inning with a two-run triple.  Sophomore Lily Cooper (Lamoine, Maine/Ellsworth) and freshman Morgan Scavetta (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) each had RBI singles.

         Stockwell picked up her first win of the season for the Huskies firing seven innings.  Stockwell allowed two earned runs on six hits and four walks while collecting six strikeouts.  York took the loss for Houghton, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks.  She struck out five.

         In the second game, Oberlin scored three runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings to secure the 6-2 win.  Freshman Sadie Oliver-Grey (Oakland, Calif./The College Preparatory) held USM to four hits over six innings with nine strikeouts to earn the win.  Oliver-Grey was helped by a 4-for-4 effort from sophomore Katie Pieplow (Rescue, Calif./Ponderosa).  Pieplow had two RBIs and two runs scored for the Yeoman.

         Stockwell was 2-for-4 for Southern Maine adding an RBI on a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning.  Senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) and Duross accounted for the Huskies' other two hits.

         Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday.  The Huskies face Grove City (5:00 p.m.) and Carthage (7:00 p.m.).
