Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team dropped a pair of games falling to the SUNY-New Paltz Hawks 6-0 and the St. Catherine's Wildcats 10-6 in the third day of competition of their Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla.
With the two losses, Southern Maine remains in the hunt for its first win of the season at 0-6. SUNY-New Paltz evened out its record at 3-3 with its win, while St. Catherine's halted a two-game losing streak to improve to 6-2 with its victory.
In the opener, the Hawks used eight hits and a pair of RBI from senior captain Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and sophomore Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Liotta had a pair of hits for the Hawks including one of two doubles for SUNY-New Paltz.
In the second game, St. Catherine's held off a late surge from Southern Maine to grab a 10-6 win. Ahead 8-0 heading into the top of the fifth, USM scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth inning to trail the Wildcats 8-6; however, St. Catherine's responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory.
Senior captain Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) and senior Jessica Hayden (Madison, Maine) each had two runs batted in to lead Southern Maine. Freshman Nicole Nutter (Westbrook, Maine) had a double as part of USM's six-hit attack.
Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday. The Huskies face Houghton (5:00 p.m.) and Oberlin (7:00 p.m.).
