Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – In its second day of its Spring Break games, the University of Southern Maine Huskies dropped back-to-back games falling to the Amherst College Lord Jeffs 10-4 and the St. Benedict College Blazers 12-4 at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. Saturday afternoon.
With the pair of losses, Southern Maine remains winless at 0-4. Amherst improved to 8-3 with its win over Southern Maine, while the Blazers, earning their third consecutive win, upped their record to 3-2.
In the first game, Amherst senior Reilly Horan (Darien, Conn./Darien) drove in three runs to lead the Lord Jeffs to their 10-4 win over Southern Maine. Trailing 1-0 after an RBI single from senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.), Amherst rallied to plate seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game. Horan started the Lord Jeffs' surge with an RBI single to left field. Horan then came around to score Amherst's second run of the game on a wild pitch as the Lord Jeffs utilized four hits, two walks and two errors to jump on top of USM. Amherst added a single run in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third to lead Southern Maine comfortably 10-1.
Davis added two more RBI in the top of the fifth to pull USM to within 10-4 of Amherst but it was as close as the Huskies would get. Davis finished with three RBI on two hits, including a double. Davis' double in the fifth inning set the USM career mark for double. Davis now has 37 doubles in her career.
In the second game, with the scored knotted up at four runs each, St. Benedict plated eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab a 13-4 win over the Huskies. Junior Lexi Alm (Stacy, Minn.) and sophomore Mackenzie Wenner (St. Peter, Minn.) each had a pair of RBI to lead the Blazers.
Southern Maine sophomore Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had a pair of RBI to lead the Huskies. Senior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) pitched well in the loss striking out five batters in 6.0 innings pitched.
Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday. The Huskies will face SUNY-New Paltz (9:00 a.m.) and St. Catherine (11:00 a.m.).
