Salem State Sinks Southern Maine

            SALEM, Mass. -- The Lady Vikings of Salem State University took both games of a doubleheader this afternoon over the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine. Salem State improves their mark on the season to 16-6, while Southern Maine drops to a record of 0-16.   

            Salem State shut out Southern Maine in the first game 8-0.  The Lady Vikings received a combined no-hitter from junior Alyssa Bryan (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Wilson (Peabody, Mass.).  Bryan pitched five innings striking out six.  Wilson entered the game in the top of the sixth inning and retired all three batters she faced to complete the no-hitter.

            The Lady Vikings also had strong performances with their bats as they scored in every inning except the first.  They were led by senior Gabbie Vitale (Danvers, MA), who helped open up a four-run fourth inning as she hit a two-run double.  Junior Sarra Bergeron who went 2-for-2 and scored a run.  Senior infielder Ashley Aldred (Arlington, Mass.) went 1-for-1, scored a run and reached base on a walk.  Aldred would come around to score the final run of the game as Salem would take advantage of a Southern Maine miscue.

            Southern Maine junior pitcher Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) took the loss for the Huskies as she pitched 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits and six earned runs. 

            In the second game of the day, Salem State out hit Southern Maine and walked away with a 10-5 victory. The Lady Vikings had 15 hits and held the Huskies to just five hits.

            Southern Maine opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when they scored two runs on one hit from senior infielder Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) and took advantage of a Salem State error.

            Salem State would respond with four runs scored on five hits in the bottom of the second frame.  The Lady Vikings would score all four runs with two outs as they made the most of a Husky error that allowed Vitale to reach and keep the inning alive.  Freshman infielder Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) and junior Christina Cipriani would both record RBI singles in the inning.

            With a 6-3 lead in going into the fourth inning, the Huskies would threaten as junior Cara Radino (Franklin, N.J.) would come up with the only hit in the inning for an RBI single. Southern Maine would take advantage of walks and base runners to score two runs to cut the Salem State lead to 6-5.

            Salem State would build upon their one-run lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-5.  A two-out double from Bryan would score Bergeron, and sophomore Jeanette Doucette (Andover, Mass.) kept the inning alive by reaching on an error.  The Lady Vikings added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 10-5 final score.  Bergeron would lead off the inning with a triple and score on a bunt single by sophomore Michelle Flower (Reading, Mass.).

            Wilson came on in relief and received the win for the Lady Vikings as she pitched a strong four innings allowing no runs and not allowing any walks.  Bryan went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Vikings offensively.  Toussaint went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and senior Michelle Griffoni was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

            The Lady Vikings are back in action tomorrow (4:00 p.m.) as they host conference rival Worcester State University at Alumni Field.  Southern Maine will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) conference doubleheader.
