Box Score 2 GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Megan Michie (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) struck out 14 batters and allowed just four hits in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader as the Colby College Mules edged the University of Southern Maine Huskies by a single run in both game to take the sweep Wednesday afternoon in Gorham, Maine. Colby defeated the Huskies 4-3 in eight innings in the opener and downed USM 2-1 in the second game.
With the pair of wins, Colby improves to 10-19 on the season. The two losses drops the Huskies overall record to 4-32.
Michie improve to 4-6 on the season scattering four hits over seven innings to lead the Mules. Michie allowed one earned run – a solo home run from USM junior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) in the bottom of the fourth inning – and gave up three walks.
Trailing 1-0 on an unearned run in the top of the second, USM's Davis gave the Huskies' the equalizer with her third homerun of the season. Davis' shot cleared the Huskies' right field fence in a hurry before settling in the bullpen at 207 feet.
After Davis' solo shot, both teams were unable to plate a run in the fifth or sixth innings and the score remained tied at 1-1. The Mules were able to score the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to secure the sweep. After allowing the first two hitters to reach base safely on a walk and an infield single, the Huskies twice cut down the lead runner on smart defense plays from senior shortstop Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) to Davis at third. However, Colby sophomore Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) delivered a two-out RBI single to center field in the clutch for a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Michie continued her strong performance. With runners on first and second with one out, Michie retired the final two USM batters on strikeouts. USM junior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle), who pitched well in the loss, allowed one earned run on eight hits and two walks. She had three strikeouts.
With the score deadlocked 1-1 through seven innings in the opener, the Mules plated three runs in the top of the eighth and held on for a 4-3 victory. Sophomore Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N>H.) earned the win allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks. Polimeno, who had nine strikeouts, fired all eight innings.
Colby senior Katie Graichen (Arundel, Maine) had a sacrifice fly for the Mules first RBI of the inning, while freshman Eric Pulford (Glen Rock, N.J.) knocked in the game-winning runs with a two run single down the right field line.
The Huskies made a game of it in the bottom of the inning plating two runs. Sophomore Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) had a pinch-hit RBI double to left center field to lead off the inning, while Stockwell had an RBI ground out. Polimeno preserved the win getting a fly out to center inning to retire USM. USM senior Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on six hits and three walks.
Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday (12:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference doubleheader. Colby travels to Trinity on Friday (12:00 p.m.).
