Bowdoin Takes Two From Southern Maine 14-6 (5) and 4-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
BRUNSWICK, Maine   – Sophomore Melissa DellaTorre (Scarborough, Maine) fired a three-hit shutout in the second game to help lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Pickard Field in Brunswick, Maine.

Winners of four consecutive games and five of its last six, Bowdoin improves to 17-8 overall.  Southern Maine falls to 1-21 with the pair of losses.

DellaTorre spun a gem for the Polar Bears scattering three hits – all singles – over seven innings while fanning nine Husky hitters.  Yielding just four walks, DellaTorre kept the Huskies' bats at bay, retiring a string of six consecutive hitters from the second through fourth innings, and only allowed three base runners to advance past second base.

Bowdoin took control of the game with a three-run bottom of the third.  The Polar Bears plated three runs on four hits including RBI singles from senior Hillary Smyth (Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) and junior Gen Barlo (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy).

Junior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) was saddle with the loss for USM.  Stockwell allowed four earned runs on nine hits and four walks.

In the opener, Bowdoin responded to a four run top of the first from the Huskies with a 12-run outburst of their own to take control of the game and cruise to a 14-6 five-inning victory.  Bowdoin scored 12 runs in the bottom half of the inning on four hits and eight walks.  The Polar Bears scoring bonanza was highlighted by a base-clearing home run from senior Amy Hackett (Bangor, Maine).

Junior Tricia Thibodeau (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) earned the win for Bowdoin allowing five earned runs on six hits over five innings.  Thibodeau yielded three walks and had three strikeouts.  Senor Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, Maine) took the loss allowing 14 earned runs on eight hits and eight walks.

Freshmen Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Emily Trembley (Old Town, Maine) each had two RBI for the Huskies.  Duross was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles, while Trembley was 1-for-2.

Southern Maine hosts Rhode Island College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference doubleheader.  Bowdoin College hosts Trinity (Conn.) College on Friday (4:00 p.m.) for the first of a three-game series.
