Box Score 2 BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England Nor'easters swepts a non-conference softball doubleheader from the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon at Claude Dubois Field in Biddeford, Maine. UNE defeated USM 3-2 in the opener and then shut out the Huskies 7-0 in the nightcap for the sweep.
With the pair of wins, UNE extends its winning streak to five games and improves its overall record to 14-6. The loss drops Southern Maine to 1-19 on the season.
The Nor'easters scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snatch a 3-2 win from the Huskies. Trailing 2-1 through five and half innings, UNE senior Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI triple to left field.
USM sophomore Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) pitched well in the loss for the Huskies. Stockwell allowed three earned runs on four hits and four walks. She struck out five. UNE senior hurler Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.) earned the win giving up two earned runs on seven hits and one walk over seven innings. She fanned two USM batters.
USM sophomore Megan Rumore (Manchester, N.H.) and senior Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) each had RBIs for the Huskies. Rumore drove in the Huskies first run of the game with a double to right-center field in the top of the second, while DeMillo had an run-scoring single to left field in the top of the fourth.
In the second game, senior Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt./U-32) fired six innings of scoreless ball to earn the win for the Nor'easters. Bigelow scattered five hits over six innings and gave up just one walk in a solid effort.
Bigelow was bolstered by a four-run second inning for UNE. The Nor'easters scored four runs on two hits and took advantage of three USM errors for the big inning. Junior Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) had the lone RBI in the inning with a single up the middle.
Junior Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine/Deering) was the hard-luck loser for the Huskies. Perdomo surrendered just three earned runs out of the seven allowing eight hits over six innings with two walks.
USM sophomore Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) had a pair of hits in the loss.
Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) for a non-conference doubleheader. UNE travels to Husson University on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) for a non-conference doubleheader.
