Southern Maine Drops Two to St. Joseph's College: 9-0 and 6-3

STANDISH, Maine   –  Sophomore Kayla Vannah (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) pitched a one-hit shut out to lead the St. Joseph's College Monks to non-conference softball doubleheader sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies Wednesday afternoon in Standish, Maine.

            St. Joseph's improves to 12-6 with the pair of wins. The Huskies drop to 2-16 suffering their 12 consecutive loss. 

            Vannah picked up her first win of the season holding the Huskies scoreless in a 9-0 five-inning game.  Vannah allowed one hit and gave up three walks en route the win, while striking out one batter.

            Junior OF Katelyn Call (Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) and 1B Alyssa Dunn (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each had two RBI in the game for the Monks.

            In the second game, senior P Kiera Walsh (Benton, Maine/Lawrence) earned the 6-3 win in the circle. Walsh pitched five innings allowing one earned run on six hits, while striking out five.  Junior P Maddie Kluna (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) earned the save pitching the final inning of the game.

            Southern Maine senior OF Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, in the loss.  Deroche drove in two of the Huskies three runs, while junior 1B Kayla Ferrara (South Portland, Maine) knocked out a solo homerun.  

            Southern Maine hosts Salem State University on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) at Wainwright Field Number Three in South Portland, Maine.  St. Joseph's hosts Emmanuel College on Friday (3:30 p.m.).
