BANGOR, Maine   – The Husson University Eagles women's softball team swept the University of Southern Maine Huskies with 8-5 and 6-1 wins in a non-conference doubleheader matchup at O'Keefe Field in Bangor, Maine.

The pair of wins snaps a three game losing streak for the Eagles who improve to 5-8 overall.  The Huskies fall to 2-14 suffering their 10th consecutive loss.

In the first game, the Huskies reached the scoreboard first off an error that plated sophomore OF Anna Allard (Parsonsfield, Maine/Sacopee Valley).  Run-scoring singles by freshman 2B Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) and sophomore DH Erin Swarbrick (Windham, Maine/Central Catholic) pushed the Southern Maine lead to 3-0 after the top of the first inning.

Husson answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, spurred by an RBI groundout by sophomore OF Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine/Sumner Memorial), a freshman P Kelly Naegelin (Cohasset, Mass.) single that plated sophomore 3B Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, Maine), and a double for Megan Richard.  Husson exploded in the fourth inning, tacking on four additional runs in an error riddled inning for USM.

Southern Maine threatened in the top of the seventh when freshman 1B Kayla Ferrara (South Portland, Maine) drove in two runners off a double to left field. On the mound, Kody Lyon, sealed the win for the Eagles with six innings of work and five strikeouts.

Sarah Deroche shouldered the loss for the Huskies, throwing six innings and giving up 9 hits, while striking out 3.

In the second game of the day, the Huskies were first to score in the top of the first when Lillian Cooper hit an RBI single up the middle to plate senior Melissa Caiazzo (Portland, Maine/Deering).  Husson responded in the bottom of the second inning of a junior 2B Bri Webster (Belfast, Maine) double that drove in two runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles tacked on three additional unearned runs to push the score to 6-1.  On the mound for the Eagles, freshman P Rebecca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine) and freshman P Kelly Naegelin (Cohasset, Mass.) combined for seven innings of work.  Naegelin threw four scoreless innings that featured four strikeouts.  University of Southern Maine's Samantha Morse (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) received the loss, giving up six runs and six hits.
