Huskies Rally to Defeat Union 9-7; Fall to Washington & Jefferson 10-2

CLERMONT, Fla. - Trailing 7-3 entering the top of the seventh inning, the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied for six runs to earn their first win, 9-7, over the Union College Dutchmen Saturday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. The Huskies dropped their second game of the day 10-2 to the Washington & Jefferson College Generals.

            With the split the Huskies stand at 1-3 on the season.  The Dutchmen fall to 0-2 with the loss, while the win is the first of the season for the 1-0 Generals.

            Junior OF Kayla Ferrara (South Portland, Maine) singled in the game tying run, while sophomore OF Anna Allard (Parsonfield, Maine/Sacopee Valley) rapped in the go-ahead run and an insurance run with a two-run single to complete the six-run, seven hit inning for the Huskies.  Both Ferrara and Allard finished the game with two RBI and two hits each.  Senior P Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) earned the win in the circle, yielding 16 hits over seven innings.  Deroche added three hits, including a pair of doubles and two RBI in a solid effort.

            Southern Maine preserved the comeback victory with a solid defensive effort in the top of the seventh.  The Huskies turned the third of three double plays in the game to record the first two outs of the home half of the seventh.  Senior SS Rachel Del Camp (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/McAuley) snagged an infield fly and then picked the runner off at second to help the USM cause.  Deroche ending the inning forcing another infield fly, this time to first base for the win.

            In the second game, the Huskies committed six fielding errors and senior IF Victoria Doerschner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) connected on three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Generals to victory. 

            Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday when it faces Wellesley (9:30) and Lawrence (11:30).
