Bethel (Minn.) Defeats Huskies 8-0 (6 Innings)

CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore OF Rachel Gilbert (Becker, Minn.) and senior 1B Stephanie Vosberg (Rochester, Minn.) each drove in two runs to lead the Bethel College Royals to an 8-0, six-inning win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Friday afternoon in Clermont, Fla.

Earning their sixth consecutive win, the Royals improve to 8-6 overall. Playing in its season-opening game, the Huskies start the 2011 season at 0-1.

Gilbert had a solid day offensively for the Royals finishing the game 2-for-4 at the plate, including a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to deliver the 8-0 win. Gilbert added three runs scored. Bethel junior P Genna Bock (Circle Pines, Minn.) earned the win in the circle scattering five hits over six innings. Bock struck out five batters and did not yield a walk en route to the shut out.

Southern Maine sophomore 3B Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) collected two of the Huskies five hits on a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Senior P Sarah Deroche (Portland, Maine/Deering) allowed six earned runs on seven hits and five walks. Deroche was hampered by six Southern Maine errors in the loss.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday. The Huskies will face Union (2:30 p.m.) and Washington & Jefferson (4:30 p.m.).
