GORHAM, Maine – Competitors on the mat and in the classroom, the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling program has 16 representatives on the 2024-2025 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) All-Academic Team.
Among the 16 NEWA All-Academic Team recipients are two-time NCAA Division III All-Americans senior
Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior
Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) – both Frost and Craig also earned National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American honors earlier this semester. Frost recently finished is degree in Health Sciences, while Craig is progressing toward a degree in Cyber Security.
Joining Frost and Craig with academic distinction are 14 more Husky wrestlers, including freshman
Jason Canavan-Dwyer (Keene, NH/Keene) who was recently named to the NEWA All-Rookie team after a solid first-year campaign in Gorham. Canavan-Dwyer is a Business Finance major.
Seniors
Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) and
Kaleb Pool (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson) join Frost in wrapping up their outstanding careers athletically and academically. Mears completed his degree in Business Management, while Pool earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Along with Craig, juniors
Jalen Charles (Port Jervis, NY/Middletown),
Vinny Keeler (Rutherford, NJ) and
Colin Sevigney (Wells, Maine) earned the academic honor. Charles and Sevigny are studying Elementary Education, while Keeler is working towards a degree in Marketing.
Five sophomores earned the honor:
Hagen Chase (Searsmont, Maine/Belfast Area),
Derek Cote (Lebanon, Maine/Noble),
Scott Ingalls (Windham, Maine),
Alberto Mendoza (McAllen, Texas/Sharyland), and
Bruce Rasmusson (Hamlin, NY/Kendall). Chase is a Finance major, while Cote and Ingalls are working towards a degree in Exercise Science. Mendoza is pursuing a degree in Nursing, and Rasmusson is studying History.
Cesar Calderin (Hollywood, Fla./South Plantation),
Nick Kotiw (Charleston, S.C./Wanda), and
Silas Runez (Keene, NH) join Canavan-Dwyer as Husky rookies earning the honor. Calder is a Biology major, while Kotiw is studying Business Finance. Runez is pursuing a degree in Sociology.
