Michael Sanchez (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown East) and sophomore
Jason Canavan-Dwyer (Keene, NH) each earned a win by fall in back-to-back bouts to help propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 27-18 season-opening win at Bridgewater State University in a wrestling dual meet Saturday afternoon.
Competing in their season-opener, USM is 1-0. Led by Sanchez and Canavan-Dwyer, the Huskies led 12-0 early, and then swept the 133, 141, 149 and 157 lb weight classes, effectively sealing the win. Freshman
Adam St. Cyr (Jefferson, Maine/Lincoln Academy) earned a win by technical fall in his collegiate debut downing Avery Calr 23-8.
On The Mat:
- Sanchez pinned his opponent in 4:32, and Canavan-Dwyer took one-second longer at 197 and 285 respectively.
- Husky senior Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) ranked fifth in NWCA national rankings opened his season with a dominant 11-2 major decision to start his final campaign.
- Junior Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue) battled to a 4-2 decision over BSU's Malcom Chrispin at 141 pounds, while sophomore Shane Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue) picked up a 4-1 win at 149 lbs.
- St. Cyr made it 27-6 for the Huskies with his win by technical fall, before BSU earned the final points of the match with wins at 165, 174 and 184 for the 27-18 final.

Southern Maine remains on the road for its next three contest dates, and will travel to compete in the Roger Williams University Invitational on Saturday, November 8 (9:00 am). The Huskies are then at the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a quad meet on Sunday, November 16 (12:00 pm) before competing at the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College on Saturday, November 22 (10:00 am). The Huskies will then host its annual Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday, December 6 (10:00 am).
