GORHAM, Maine - Led by 2025 NCAA Division III All-American senior
Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan), five members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team earned a spot in the inaugural regional rankings released by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).
Joining Craig in the regional rankings are juniors
Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (New York)) and
Derek Cote (Lebanon, Maine/Noble), and sophomores
Shane Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (New York)), and
Jason Canavan-Dwyer (Keene, NH/Keene). As a team, the Huskies enter the 2025-2026 season ranked ninth in the NEWA Team Rankings.
Ranked first at 133 lbs to start the season, Craig is a two-time NCAA All-American (2023, 2025), a three-time NCAA National Championship qualifier, and a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American. Placing sixth at the NCAA National Championship while competing at 125 lbs, Craig is a three-time All-Region wrestler. Wrestling at both 125 and 133 lbs, Craig completed his outstanding third-year as a Husky with a record of 28-8, and is one of just three Husky wrestlers in program history to earn the title of All-American more than once in their career. A consistent performer for the Huskies since his first season (2022-2023), Craig was named the 2023 New England Wrestling Association Rookie of the Year, and is a two-time All-NEWA performer earning second team honors in both 2023 and 2024. As a three-time NWCA Scholar All-American, and a 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection, Craig is working towards a degree in Cyber Security. Craig will enter his final season as a Husky with a record of 82-20.
Completing a strong sophomore campaign,
Kyle Moore is ranked third at 141 pounds. Moore secured 2024 NCAA All-Northeast Region honors placing fourth at 141 pounds and narrowly missing out on a bid to the national championship tournament. Ranked in the region for a majority of the season, Moore finished the 2024-2025 season with a record of 26-11, including six wins by fall, and four wins by technical fall. A 2024 NEWA All-Rookie selection, and a 2025 NEWA Honorable Mention pick, Moore is earning his degree in Exercise Science. Moore will enter his junior season with a record of 43-22.
Named to the 2024-2025 NEWA All-Rookie team, Canavan-Dwyer put together a solid first season for the Huskies, going 12-12 while competing at 285 lbs, including five wins by fall. Named the NEWA Rookie of the Week once during the season, Canavan-Dwyer earned the recognition after a 4-1 decision against the no. 5 ranked wrestler in the region as USM earned a 25-17 win over Rhode Island College. Canavan-Dwyer is a Business Finance major, and earned NEWA All-Academic Team honors.
Competing at both 165 and 174 lbs for the Huskies, Cote posted a 16-15 record, and had 10 wins by fall. Earning regional rankings during his sophomore season, Cote begins the 2025-2026 campaign ranked eighth at 174 1lbs. An Exercise Science major, Cote earned NEWA All-Academic Team honors.
After a promising but injury-shortened rookie campaign,
Shane Moore enters his sophomore season ranked eighth at 149 lbs. Finishing the season with a 7-6 record while competing at 149, Moore was dominant in his wins picking up two wins by fall, and two wins by technical fall. Moore is a Sport Management major.
Southern Maine opens its season on the road on Friday, November 1 (2:00 pm) at Bridgewater State University in a dual meet. The Huskies will host their annual Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday, December 6 (10:00 am).
