GORHAM, Maine  –  Seniors Jake Peavey (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) claimed the individual title and six Huskies earned a spot on the podium as the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team took fourth place at its own 2021 Ted Reese Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.  
 
Southern Maine scored 108.5 points as a team to place fourth out of 12 competing teams.  Nationally-ranked United States Coast Guard Academy placed first overall with 176.5 points, followed by Castleton with 164 points.  American International College placed third with 113 points. 


 
Husky Highlights:
133:  Sophomore Ethan Ford (Andover, Mass./North Andover) placed third picking up a win by fall over American International College's  Aaron Morocho in 4:37, before securing third place with a win by medical forfeit.
 
149: Freshman Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) continued his strong start to his collegiate career, placing sixth.  Wrestling back from a second-round loss, Frost had back-to-back wins by fall over Castleton's Kaden Gransbury in 2:36, and Plymouth State's Tyler O'Mara in 6:33.  Frost is 11-6 on the season.
 
157: Another rookie, freshman Tyler Haynes earned a fifth place finish winning three consecutive matches after a second round loss.  Highlighting Haynes three wins were a pair of wins by decision over Castleton's Jacob Caricoto 12-9, and a major decision win over Springfield Tech's Ali Zebian 12-3 to secure the fifth place spot.
 
165: Senior David Kurker (Needham, Mass.) battled to a second place finish opening the tourney with a 19-3 (4:50) technical fall win over Plymouth State's Joe Pontillo and a 7-2 decision over Castleton's Ethan Palanca.  Kurker dropped a 5-1 decision to Castleton's Michael Angers in the championship bout. Angers, the top ranked wrestler in New England, is nationally ranked by d3wrestle.com
 
174: Opening with a pair of convincing wins by decision, 6-0 over Castleton's Syrus Colon and 6-3 over Plymouth State's Colin Mengold, senior Juan Vernaza (Miramar, Fla./Somerset Academy) wrestled an outstanding match in the third place boud to defeat Coast Guard's Turman Noble by major decision 10-1.
 
184: Graduate student Aidan Whitis (Gorham, Maine) took fourth place with back-to-back wins by fall over MIT's Logan Madrigal-Silver (1:20) and UNH's RJ Capodilupo (1:33).  Whitis lost to Coast Guard's Paul Detwiler – ranked no. 1 in New England and no. 2 in the nation – by technical fall 21-6 (6:39).
 
285: Ranked second in the region and 15^th nationally by NWCA, Peavey went undefeated at 4-0 to claim the 285 title for the Huskies.  He opened the tourney with a 4-0 decision over Coast Guard's Brian Morel (ranked eighth in New England), and then pinned Springfield Tech's Shawn Conniff in 2:19.  Peavey advanced to the championship bout with a 7-2 decision over Castleton's Shea Garand (ranked sixth in New England), and claimed the title with a medical forfeit from USCGA.
