Huskies Split with UMass Dartmouth; Finish Third in LEC Regular Season

GORHAM, Maine  – Sophomore Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) spun a three-hit gem with seven strike outs and one walk to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 shut out win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the USM Softball Stadium. 

 

With the split, Southern Maine is 21-18 overall and 8-6 in the Little East Conference.  The Huskies finish third in the LEC regular season standings and will be the third seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament.  Beginning Thursday (tbd), Southern Maine will face fourth seeded Western Connecticut in its first game of the three-day, double-elimination tournament hosted by regular season champions Plymouth State University.  UMass Dartmouth is 23-13 with the split and 7-7 in the LEC.  The Corsairs will be the fifth seed in the LEC tourney. 

 

GAME ONE: UMD 9, Southern Maine 1

Trailing 1-0 after a solo home run from USM freshman Kayleigh Bohan in the bottom of the third, UMass Dartmoth scored four runs in the top of the fourth and five more in the top of the seventh to earn a 9-1 win in the opener. Maddie O'Gryzek was 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI for the Corsairs, while Kylie Fletcher was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. 

 

UMD starter Hannah Smith earned the win limiting USM to just four hits and a walk over five innings giving up just one earned run on Bohan's solo shot in the third. USM starter Amber Kelly took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks.  

 

GAME TWO: Southern Maine 3, UMD 0

Brown earned her ninth win of the season to improve to 9-3 overall and picked up her third win by shut out of the season to lead USM to the game two win. Holding the Corsairs to just three singles over the course of the game, Brown struck out seven batters for the victory. 

 

Sophomore Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass) added an RBI on a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double.  Davis now has 106 career RBI and needs four more to tie the Huskies' career record of 110 held by former Husky great and All-American Julie Plant.  

 

Three of the Huskies seven hits in the game went for extra bases including a triple from Martin and doubles from Davis and junior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). 

 

Smith took the loss for the Corsairs allowing one earned run in three innings pitches on two hits. Annika Everson allowed two earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
