Box Score Southern Maine Downs Saint Michael's 4-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Four different players scored goals as the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team won its second game of the season Saturday afternoon defeating visiting Saint Michael's College 4-2 in NEHC (New England Hockey Conference) action at the USM Ice Arena.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies and evened their record at 2-2 overall, and 1-1 in league play. The Purple Knights dropped their second straight to fall to 0-2 overall and in the league.
USM took the lead just 2:44 into the game as senior Todd Bannerman (Georgetown, Ont.) buried a 25-foot shot from the slot after taking a pass from sophomore Brett Norman (Dawson Creek, B.C.).
The Huskies' lead grew to 2-0 at 15:52 as rookie Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) deposited the rebound of a shot by senior Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ont.) past Saint Michael's rookie goalie Chris Johnson (Duxbury, Mass.) for his first collegiate goal. Johnson stopped Dymock's low, hard shot with the left pad, but the rebound went right out to Sanderson in the right-wing circle, and the freshman put the puck in the net before Johnson could recover.
Sophomore Alex Pantalone (Hudson, Mass.) extended the Huskies' lead midway through the second period scoring from low in the right-wing circle. Classmate Patrick Magliano (Pelham, N.H.) and senior Daniel Mattsson (Uppsala, Sweden) picked up the assists.
Saint Michael's, which was shut out in its season opener Friday night, got on the scoreboard for the first time this season later in the period as junior Connor Mitchell (New Milford, Conn.) scored from in close. Junior Danny Divis (Media, Penn.) and senior Nick Potter (Stoneham, Mass) picked up the assists.
The teams traded third-period goals 61 seconds apart midway through the stanza. Dymock picked up his third goal of the season at 10:16 before rookie Sam D'Antuono (Hingham, Mass.) scored an unassisted marker at 11:17 for Saint Michael's.
