Salve Regina Defeats Southern Maine 4-0

GORHAM, Maine – The Salve Regina University Seahawks defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's ice hockey team by a score of 4-0 on Friday night in Gorham's USM Ice Arena to complete the season sweep over the Huskies. Cody Plaza and Jack Arizo scored the first two goals for the Seahawks before the visitors added two empty-net goals in the closing minutes of the contest.
 
Freshman Loic Morin (Drummondville, Quebec) finished with 32 saves for Southern Maine. Salve Regina's Selby Warren made 16 saves in the shutout.

Series History:
The Huskies lead the all-time series 6-2-0. The teams previously met to open the season on October 31 in Rhode Island in a game that the hosts won 4-0.
 
The Goaltenders:
Salve Regina: Selby Warren (7-1-0), 60:00, zero goals allowed, 21 saves
Southern Maine: Loic Morin (4-3-1): 59:27, two goal allowed, 32 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Plaza gave Salve Regina a 1-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first period with Thomas Gerum and Aidan Elkins recording the assists.
  • Arizo cashed in on the power play with 21 seconds to go in the second period to extend the lead to 2-0. The assists on the goal came from Matthew Brunton and Aidan Coupe. Morin made 15 saves in the second period prior to the goal.
  • Salve Regina added two empty-net goals for the 4-0 final. Grant Hineman recorded the first, while the second came from Brendan Abban after a change of possession while the Huskies were attempting to bring on an extra skater.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Salve Regina had a 36-21 lead in shots on goal. Freshman Jordan Bezio (North Hampton, N.H.) led the Huskies with three shots on goal.
  • The game featured five penalties for each side. The Seahawks were 1-for-4 on the power play. Southern Maine went 0-for-4.
  • The Seahawks had a slight 30-27 lead in faceoff wins.
  • The Huskies blocked a season-high 18 shots led by three by junior Adrian Jubran (Knoxville, Tenn./James Madison). Senior John Hagan (Canton, Mass./Tilton School), senior Kadin Ilott (Kenora, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary School), junior Owen Drummey (Falmouth, Maine), sophomore Hunter Svicki (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Ben Thornley-Hall (Coquitlam, British Columbia) each blocked multiple shots as well.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies finish the 2025 portion of their schedule with a record of 5-4-1. The team will return to action in 2026 with the inaugural Lobster Pot tournament, a showcase of Maine's NCAA DIII hockey teams. The Huskies will face Bowdoin College in the first game on Friday, January 2 at 7:00 pm and they will face either Colby College or the University of New England the next day in either the championship game or the consolation game.
