Mia Coots (Newport, Maine/Nokomis) and freshman
Emily Wheeler (Old Town, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' softball team have each earned weekly honors from the Maine College Baseball & Softball Association (MCBSA). Coots was named the Pitcher of the Week, while Wheeler was selected as the Rookie of the Week.
Coots was dominant in the circle across three appearances last week, posting a 3-0 record with an impressive 1.20 earned run average and a 0.47 WHIP. She limited opponents to just seven hits over 15 innings of work while recording 15 strikeouts and throwing two complete games. Coots opened the week with a seven-inning performance against Framingham State, striking out eight while allowing just two runs in a 6-2 victory. In an 8-0 win over Alverno, Coots tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out five over five innings. She closed out the week with three innings of work in a 13-2 win over Keuka, striking out four and surrendering just one hit.
Recently named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, Wheeler had an outstanding week at the plate for the Huskies, posting a .500/.545/.750 slash line during a 5-1 stretch. She reached base safely in five of the six games, recorded three doubles and a triple, scored eight runs, and drove in one. Wheeler also tallied three multi-hit performances, going 3-for-3 in a win over Framingham, 3-for-3 with three runs scored in a victory over Keuka, and 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a win
Southern Maine, 7-2 overall, is scheduled to play at Saint Joseph's College on Thursday, March 26 (3:00 pm) in a non-conference doubleheader. The Huskies then travel to Eastern Connecticut for its Little East Conference opener in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 (12:00 pm).
