GORHAM, Maine - Facing a pair of in-region tests, senior
Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) and junior
Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue) each came up big as the University of Southern Maine Huskies competed in their second home event of the season, the USM Quad Meet, Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
Southern Maine dispatched the Plymouth State Panthers 50-4 and fell in competitive matches to Trinity College Bantams, 24-14, and to Western New England University Golden Bears, 29-13.
Southern Maine is back in action at home on Saturday, November 14 (12:00 pm) for a dual meet against Norwich University. The Huskies will celebrate its senior student-athletes prior to the contest.
In its first match of the day, Southern Maine claimed victories in nine of its 10 bouts for the 50-4 final over Plymouth State. Sophomores
Shane Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue) and
Jason Canavan-Dwyer (Keene, NH) and freshmen
Logan Martins (Johnston, Rhode Island) each had a win by fall. Freshman
James Allen-Chaplick (Sanford, Maine) and
Nate Wolyniec (Oxford, Conn.) each had wins by technical fall. Martins had the first pin of the day putting PSU's Hayden Durocher to the mat in 5:34 at 133 lbs. At 149 lbs, Moore downed Gabriel Berger in 3:48, while Canavan-Dwyer ended the match at 285 with a 5:45 pin. Allen-Chaplick dominated the 141-pound bout with a 15-0 (5:00) win, and Wolyniec cruised to a 19-4 (4:48) win at 165 lbs.
Against Trinity, Craig faced his first challeng of the day facing off against third-ranked Matthew Carrozza at 133 lbs. Entering the match ranked fourth nationally and second in the region at 133 lbs, Craig defeated Carrozza cleanly 5-0.
Kyle Moore followed at 141 points. Ranked second in the region in his class, Moore squared off against third-ranked Ty Trickle. Trickle led Moore 7-2, but Moore fought back to tie the match up at 10 forcing extra time. Scoring the takedown, Moore picked up the key win over Trickle 13-10 (SV-1).
Three matches with the Bantams went to sudden victory for the Huskies with Moore being the lone victor. Senior
Troy Moscatelli (Brookline, NH/Hollis Brookline) earned a 4:01 win by fall at 174-lbs for the Huskies, and junior
Michael Sanchez (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown East) picked up a gutsy 13-10 decision at 197 pounds.
Against WNEU, both Craig and K. Moore faced in-region ranked opponents again. Taking on fifth-ranked Antonio Intintoli at 133 lbs, Craig made quick work of his opponent earning a dominant 18-1 win by technical fall in 3:44. At 141 lbs, K. Moore took on eighth ranked Austin Monteiro and earned a hard-won 6-5 win. Canavan-Dwyer also scored for the Huskies, earning a 20-4 technical fall win over Colton Wells in 4:15 in the 285-lb bout.
