GORHAM, Maine – Fifth-year senior Zoe Barnes (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester), freshman Madi Sainis (Pierrefords, Quebec) and senior Janiah Young (Perkinsville, Vt.) of the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track & field track have earned weekly awards from the Little East Conference for their performances at Saturday's USM Open II. Barnes was named the LEC Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season while Sainis earned her second LEC Track Rookie of the Week award of the year. Young was chosen as the LEC Track Athlete of the Week.
 
Barnes once again shattered her own program record in the shot put with a toss of 13.79m to win the event and improve her position on the national NCAA Division III leaderboard. She now ranks third national and has the top mark in the East region. Barnes beat her previous record of 13.52m twice during the event as her fourth throw went 13.59m before recording her best mark of the day on her final throw.
 
Young placed first in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.35 seconds in the finals to tie for the third-fastest time in program history. She also clocked the fastest time in the prelims at 7.40 seconds. Her converted 60m time of 7.92 seconds ranks fourth in the East region this season.
 
Sainis placed second in the mile with a time of 5:15.90. Her time moves her into eighth in program history in the event. The time also has propelled her up the national and region rankings as her converted time of 5:12.81 leads the East region and ranks 20th nationally.
 
Young and Sainis also ran on a sprint medley relay team that placed first in their event with a time of 4:20.65.
 
The next meet for the Huskies will be the Bates Invitational this weekend.
