GORHAM, Maine – Senior Azam Jiwa (Calgary, Alberta) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team has earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors for the 2024-25 season. To be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must have been in the lineup for 70 percent of an institution's days of competition, and must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.  Graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher as both an undergrad and graduate student-athlete.
 
Jiwa, a Business Analytics major, is now a two-time Academic All-District honoree having earned the honor in 2023. Jiwa played in 10 matches of the team's 11 matches this season. He spent most of the season in the second singles position and earned two wins. Jiwa also posted three wins playing at No. 2 doubles with fellow senior Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec). The pair earned the lone point for the Huskies in the team's 5-1 loss to Western Connecticut State University in the 2025 Little East Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.
 
A three-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete, Jiwa has earned Little East Conference All-Academic Team status twice in his career. In addition to tennis, Jiwa played four seasons for the USM men's ice hockey team and has been named to the New England Hockey Conference All-Academic Team twice.
 
Designated Academic All-District student-athletes are eligible for selection to the Academic All-America program. College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors.  Currently, CSC sponsors Academic All-America® programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country. Many other sports are eligible through the At-Large program, including USM sponsored sports field hockey, golf, ice hockey, and wrestling.
