Drummey, Richards and Shain Qualify for NCAA DIII Indoor Championships

GORHAM, Maine – Fifth-year senior Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine), freshman Joey Richards (Winslow, Maine) and graduate student Ethan Shain (Sanford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's track & field team will be competing at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Drummey will compete in the pole vault while Richards and Shain will represent the Huskies on the track in 400 meters and the 60-meter dash, respectively. The National Championships will be held from March 14-15 at the Golisano Training Center at Nazareth University in Rochester, N.Y. Qualification to the championships is based on the descending-order list for the season with the top 20 declared student-athletes accepted into the competition.

Drummey, the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Division III National Champion in the pole vault, will be making his fourth consecutive appearance at the indoor national championship meet. Last season's event saw him place second and earn First Team All-America honors for third time in his indoor career. Drummey entered this weekend on the bubble for national championship placement and cleared a season-best height of 4.98m to comfortably secure his trip to Rochester. His mark is 12th on the national leaderboard.

Richards earned the last qualifying spot in the 400 meters with a converted time of 48.84 seconds. He broke the program record in the event at the Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic on February 1 with a time of 48.07 seconds. His converted time from the event bolted him into the national championship qualification conversation and ultimately earned him a bid.

Shain is returning to the national championship meet after securing Second Team All-America status in 2024 in the 60-meter dash by placing 16th. He set a program record in the event this season with a time of 6.81 seconds in the prelims of the NCAA Division III Championships on February 28. He then matched his record the next day to win the New England title in the event.

All three will compete on Friday, March 14. The preliminary round of the 60-meter dash is scheduled for 2:00 pm and the prelims for the 400 meters will start at 3:05 pm. The pole vault is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
