GORHAM, Maine – Freshman guard
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Acdaemy) and freshman forward
Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's basketball team have each earned post-season honors from the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (MWBCA). Both Wiles and Shipley were named to the MWBCA All-Rookie team, while Wiles additionally named the MWBCA Rookie of the Year. It is the fourth Rookie of the Year citation for Wiles.
Previously named the D3hoops.com, New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) and Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Wiles' selection as the MWBCA Rookie of the Year makes her just one of three Husky women's basketball student-athletes to earn the quartet of awards joining Kristen Curley (2017-2018) and Curran Leighton (2009-2010). Wiles is one of five Huskies to be named MWBCA Rookie of the Year: Curley, Erin McNamara (2010-2011), Leighton and Tiffany Jones (2002-2003).
Wiles led the Huskies in scoring and assists per game, sliding into the role of starting point guard in her first season. Averaging 13.0 points per game while adding 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, Wiles scored in double-figures in 19 of 28 games played, including a career-high 29 points in the Huskies' 71-57 win over Rhode Island College in the semifinals of the conference championship tournament. Wiles' 29 points against the Anchormen went along with seven rebounds and five assists helped unseat the four-time defending LEC Champions. In her first post-season games, Wiles averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.7 steals per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field.
One of 16 Huskies to earn a spot on the MWBCA All-Rookie Team, Shipley had an outstanding first season in Gorham averaging 9.8 points and a team-leading 5.9 rebounds per game. Playing in 27 games, Shipley worked her way into the Huskies' starting lineup mid-season and started 17 contests. Scoring a career-high 22 points in Southern Maine's 74-68 upset win over nationally-ranked UMass Dartmouth (February 15), Shipley reached double-digits in scoring on 11 occasions. Snagging double-figures in rebounding in five games, Shipley had three double-doubles, including a remarkable 14 points, 19 rebounds performance against UMass Boston in the quarterfinals of the 2025 LEC Tourney – a 59-48 Husky win. Shipley finished her rookie season with 264 points, 160 rebounds, 25 assists, 24 steals and a team-leading 19 blocked shots.
Southern Maine finished the 2024-25 season with an 18-10 overall record and a 12-4 mark in Little East Conference action. Claiming the third seed for the 2025 LEC women's basketball championship tournament, the Huskies advanced to the championship game of the tournament for the first time since the 2014 season, making their conference-record 27
th appearance all-time.
