GORHAM, Maine – After a standout freshman season, University of Southern Maine Huskies' freshman guard
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) will add another post-season accolade to her resume, earning the 2024-2025 New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Rookie of the Year Award. Recently named the 2025 Little East Conference (LEC) Rookie of the Year, Wiles made an immediate impact for the Huskies sliding into a starting point guard role while leading Southern Maine in scoring and assists per game.
The first Husky to earn LEC Rookie of the Year honors since Kristen Curley (2018-2021) did in 2018, Wiles is also the first Husky to earn NEWBA Rookie of the Year awards since Curley. Wiles also earned a spot on the LEC's All-Conference second team. Just the sixth Husky to earn Rookie of the Year honors from the Litlte East, Wiles is the third overall Southern Maine women's basketball player to receive the distinction from NEWBA joining Curley and Curran Leighton (2009-2010).
In her first season in Gorham, Wiles averaged a team-leading 13.0 points per game while adding 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Named the LEC's Rookie of the Week twice, and the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Rookie of the Week three times, Wiles scored in double-figures in 19 of her 28 games played, scoring a career-high 29 points in the Huskies' 71-57 win over Rhode Island College in the semifinals of the conference championship tournament. Wiles' 29 points against the Anchormen went along with seven rebounds and five assists helped unseat the four-time defending LEC Champions. In her first post-season games, Wiles averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.7 steals per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field.
Southern Maine finished the 2024-25 season with an 18-10 overall record and a 12-4 mark in Little East Conference action. Claiming the third seed for the 2025 LEC women's basketball championship tournament, the Huskies advanced to the championship game of the tournament for the first time since the 2014 season, making their conference-record 27
th appearance all-time.
