PORTLAND, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's golf team started the 2024 season on a high note by defeating the Saint Joseph's Monks and the UMaine Farmington Beavers on Friday afternoon at Riverside Golf Course. The Huskies took first place with a team score of 304 (+16). The Monks shot a 323 (+35) as a team while the Beavers had a score of 338 (+50).
Freshman
Taylor Farr (Gorham, Maine) shot one-over par (73) to claim the top spot on the leaderboard. Farr competed for the Huskies' B team at the event. Two Huskies tied for second as junior
Sam Farr (Gorham, Maine) and freshman
Owen Moore (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute) each fired a 74 (+2). Fourth place went to Drew Mathieu from Saint Joseph's with a 75 (+3) while freshman
Alex Grant (St. Albans, Maine/Nokomis Regional) placed fifth with a score of 76 (+4).
Freshman
Colby Pope (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) placed sixth with a score of 77 (+5) and freshman
Carter O'Connell (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) tied for seventh with UMaine Farmington's Neil LaRochelle III and Saint Joseph's' Braden Camire with each player carding a 79 (+7).
Sophomore
Jackson Horne (Woodsville, N.H.) and freshman
Alex Fournier (Augusta, Maine/Cony) tied for 10th after each shot eight-over par (80). Senior
Owen Doyle (Gardiner, Maine) and freshman
Jaden Poirier (White River Junction, Vt./Hartford) also competed. Doyle placed 13th with a score of 82 (+10) and Poirier placed 17th with an 88 (+16).
The next event for the Huskies is the John Queenan Memorial Invitational on Wednesday, September 4 at Point Sebago Golf Course.
