SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior
Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) went 4-0 on the day and claimed first place at 149 lbs to highlight a strong showing from the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the 2024 Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
Frost was one of four Huskies to earn a podium spot, finishing atop his bracket with a pair of wins by fall, a major decision and a strong 8-5 win over Coast Guard's Nate Fitt for the title. The title bout between Frost and Fitt featured the No. 3 nationally-ranked wrestler (Frost) squaring off against the No.4 nationally-ranked wrestler (Fitt). With the win, Frost solidifies his standing and improves to 12-0 on the season. Frost is now 94-23 in his career.
Joining Frost on the podium is sophomore
Kyle Moore (Kennebunk, Maine/Division Avenue (NY), and seniors
Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) and
Tyler Haynes (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen). Moore placed second at 141 lbs, while Mears earned a fourth place spot at 197 pounds. Haynes battled to a sixth place finish at 174 lbs.
On the Mat:
- Moore earned three consecutive extra point wins to advance to the semifinals of the 141-pound bracket. Moore, currently unranked in region, defeated Coast Guard's Owen Woolcott by decision 9-3 to advance to the championship round. Woolcott is ranked fourth in region. Moore dropped a hard-fought 8-3 decision in the title match to the third-ranked wrestler in the region, Wesleyan's Hayden Meyers.
- Frost rumbled his way through the 149-pound competition, starting with a win by fall and major decision. Ranked first in the region, Frost downed the third ranked wrestler in region and 15th in the nation Boburjon Berdiyorov of New England College by fall in 6:10 in the semifinal round. In the championship, Frost and Fitt clashed with Frost coming away the victor.
- Haynes scrapped with way to a sixth place finish going 3-1 to start before taking a medical forfeit in the fifth place match. Haynes had a win by fall, 6:01, against Western New England's CJ Glaropoulos in the tourney, and a 17-1 win by technical fall WNEU's Maxwell Bluhm.
- Ranked eighth in the region, Mears earned back-to-back wins to start is tourney to put himself in podium contention. Among Mears' wins, a 4-2 decision over fourth-ranked Christian Curley of Bridgewater State.
