Southern Maine Athletics to Honor a Record 256 Wise Scholar-Athletes on February 11 (12 pm)

Huskies’ Athletics Boasts Collective 3.23 GPA Among 450 Student-Athletes

GORHAM, Maine – Two hundred fifty-six University of Southern Maine student-athletes will be recognized for their outstanding athletic and academic achievements during the annual William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Awards Ceremony and Banquet on Sunday, February 11, 2024 (12:00 pm).  Huskies' Athletics will host its 35th annual William B. Wise awards reception at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Maine beginning at 12:00 pm.

As customary, the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete ceremony will feature student-athlete speakers and award recipients. Addressing their peers, family and University staff and faculty at the event will be senior Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass) of the women's soccer team, and senior Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces).  Long-time University of Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean, Associate Athletic Director Kim Turner, and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Georita Frierson will make remarks to this outstanding collection of student-athletes, and their family and friends.

The first All-American in the women's soccer program history, Atwood broke her own single-season record for shutouts (12) and became the Huskies' all-time leader in shutouts (27) during the 2023 season. Repeating as the Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, Atwood helped Southern Maine to its second consecutive Little East Conference Championship, and made seven saves in the Huskies' 2-0 win over No. 10 Rowan University to earn the program's first ever NCAA Tournament win.  Earning first team All-Region honors from United Soccer Coaches and New England Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Association (NEWISA) in 2023, Atwood is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team member, and is a three-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete as a Health Science major.

The most recent men's basketball player to score 1000 points in his career, Dixon is an All-Little East Conference guard for the Huskies. Shooting with incredible range, Dixon is having a career season in 2023-2024 and is averaging 18.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game.  Shooting 33.3 percent (40-for-120) from three so far this season, Dixon has 184 threes in his career (74 games), and is presently second all-time in USM records (Joe Cawley (1988-1992) holds the record with 230).  An outstanding student-athlete, Dixon is a three-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, and was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, and to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team in 2022-2023. Dixon is a Sport Management major.

Created during the 1987-1988 academic year, the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award is named in honor of William B. Wise, a retired USM administrator and friend of athletics.  A graduate of the University of Maine, Wise came to USM in 1966 as assistant dean of academic affairs and director of the evening college.  In the ensuing years, he served the University tirelessly in a variety of roles, including acting dean of the College of Education, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, and executive assistant to the vice president for student affairs. During this year's University of Southern Maine Homecoming and Family Weekend, the Athletic Department's Learning Center was renamed in Wise's honor.  Wise, his family, and many former student-athletes, coaches and colleagues were on hand to congratulate Wise on his lasting impact.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, 256 Huskies met or exceeded the criteria to receive Wise Scholar-Athlete recognition, and the Huskies' Athletic Department's nearly 450 student-athletes, representing 45 distinct academic majors, combined for a grade point average of 3.23.  To earn William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete accolades, a Southern Maine student-athlete must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and be a member of varsity team for a full season.  Each of the Huskies' 22 intercollegiate programs has representation among the 256 student-athletes to be honored.

"More than 50 percent of our University of Southern Maine student-athletes have put in the effort and commitment to earn a 3.0 or greater grade point average, and that is outstanding," said USM Director of Athletics Al Bean.  "The dedication and determination of our student-athletes to achieve at the highest levels both academically and athletically is something the entire University can be proud of. The life of a Division III student-athlete requires a high level of discipline and drive, and each of these 256 student-athletes have balanced many responsibilities in addition to their status as full-time students, including part-time jobs, family, internships, community service, team travel, and more.  As a group, these student-athletes continue to raise the bar, and I could not be more proud of the continued success, hard work and perseverance of Husky student-athletes."

Five University of Southern Maine Huskies will earn the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete honor for a rare fifth time, including NCAA Division III All-American wrestler Jake Peavey (China, Maine/Erskine Academy).  Currently a member of the Huskies' coaching staff and completing his Master's degree in Leadership Studies, Peavey earned Academic All-America honors in 2023, and completed his career as the 2023 Northeast Region Champion (285 lbs) and as a two-time Albert D. Bean Leadership Award winner.  Three of the five-year winners are working towards their Master's degree in Leadership Studies, while one finished their degree in Nursing and another in Marketing.

An outstanding 22 student-athletes will be honored with their fourth Wise Award. Among the four-time Wise winners is three-time All-Little East Conference first baseman Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.).  A standout in competition, community service and leadership, Scott was a 2023 Paula D. Hodgdon Leadership Award winner, and is currently president of the Huskies' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The Huskies student-athletes who have earned the academic honor for the fourth time represent a broad range of academic pursuits (15 in total) including Athletic Training, Business Management, Sport Management, Sociology, Biology, Nursing, Mechanical Engineering, Health Science, Marketing, Elementary Education, Environmental Science, History Education and Biology Education, Master's in Education – Teacher Leadership, and Master's in Leadership Studies.

Forty-one Huskies are earning Wise accolades for the third time representing 18 different majors with the highest concentration in Health Science (7), Nursing, Biology and Business Management (5), and unique majors like Music Education, Linguistics, Social and Behavioral Science and Social Work.

Senior Hannah Banks (Belfast, Maine), the 2023 Little East Conference Field Hockey Tournament Most Outstanding Player, is one of the 41 three-time recipients.  A three-time All-LEC selection, Banks scored the Huskies' game-winning goal in the 2023 LEC title game, lifting Southern Maine to its first field hockey championship in 20 years.  A Business Management major, Banks has been honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association as a National Academic Team member.

Two-time NCAA Division III National Champion in the pole vault, Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine) from the Huskies' men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams is also among the three-time award winners.  A Nursing major, Drummey was named the 2023 U.S. Track & Field, Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Scholar Field Athlete of the Year, and a 2023 College Sports Communicators Second Team Academic All-American.

Sixty-eight student-athletes are earning Wise Scholar Athlete honors for the second time highlighting 32 majors at the University of Southern Maine, including Criminology, Technology Management, Chemistry, Economics and Mechanical Engineering.  Junior Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec), a two-sport student-athlete as a member of the Huskies' men's ice hockey and tennis teams, is one of the 68 two-time award winners.  A 2022-2023 New England Hockey Conference All-Academic Team selection, Desmarais was a captain of the Huskies' 2022-23 hockey team.

Rounding out the 2022 Wise recipients are 120 first-time honorees, including NCAA Division III All-American wrestler Jake Craig (Skowhegan, Maine) and women's track and field All-Region thrower Zoe Barnes (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). A Health Sciences major, Barnes recorded the second-best shot put distance in the region with a toss of 12.84m at the New England Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Her distance is third-best in program history and trails only Ashley Belanger's marks of 12.98m and 12.96m.

A Cyber Security major, Craig is just the third freshman to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championship in Southern Maine wrestling program history, Craig earned All-American honors in his first trip to nationals placing fourth at 125 lbs.  Placing second at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship, Craig spent a majority of his rookie campaign nationally-ranked in his weight division and completed his season with a remarkable record of 26-4.

Along with the many individual achievements of USM student-athletes, two teams will receive the Remo Riciputi Award.  The Remo Riciputi, given annually to the team sport, and the individual team sport with the highest collective grade-point average, will be announced as part of the awards banquet.  The 2022-2023 recipients of the Riciputi award were the women's ice hockey and women's cross country team.
