GORHAM, Maine – Four members of the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team have been named to the 2022-23 Krampade/American Hockey Coaches Association All-American Scholar team. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.75 GPA for each semester for the 2022-23 academic year and had to appear in 40% of the team's games with some exceptions being granted to injured players and back-up goaltenders.

Graduate student
Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) earned the honor for the second time in his career after previously making the grade in 2019-20. Joining Gardiner on the list are sophomores
Tyler Mitchell (Burlington, Ontario) and
Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass.) and first-year
Jakub Suran (Liberec, Czech Republic).

Gardiner graduated from Southern Maine in 2022 with a degree in Athletic Training and competed during the 2022-23 season while pursuing his Master's degree in Leadership Studies. During the season he totaled three goals and three assists. Gardiner also earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors for the 2022-23 academic year.

Mitchell, a Business Analytics major, recorded five points from a pair of goals and three helpers. One of his goals came in a 7-2 rout of Anna Maria in which he also recorded an assist.

Penton, a Criminology major, made 15 starts between the pipes and finished the season with a 3.08 goals against average and four wins. He recorded one shutout in which he stopped 33 shots in a 3-0 home win over Johnson & Wales.

Suran, a Computer Science major, logged five points in his first season as a Husky. Two of his points came in his Southern Maine debut when he scored a goal and assisted on another in the season-opener against Saint Anselm.

On the ice, Southern Maine went 5-18-2 overall and 4-14-0 in New England Hockey Conference play. Â
