GORHAM, Maine – Graduate student
Jake Peavey (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team added another honor to his lengthy award resume after being named to the 2022-2023 Academic All-America ® Men's At Large (Third Team) as selected by members of the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Peavey becomes the 12th individual student-athlete (see complete list below) since 2000, and the first since 2021, to receive the prestigious honor from College Sports Communicators. Earning his undergraduate degree in Business Management in the spring of 2022, Peavey is currently a graduate student pursuing his Master's degree in Leadership Studies, carrying a remarkable 4.00 grade point average in his graduate studies and a 3.87 GPA in his undergraduate major. He is the second member of the Huskies' wrestling team to be honored joining 2017 NCAA Division III National Champion and two-time Academic All-American Dan Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine).
"It comes as no surprise that Jake has earned this outstanding honor," noted University of Southern Maine wrestling coach
Mike Morin '10. "Jake's commitment and dedication to his academics and athletics have always been a top priority. Jake has been a standout athlete, student, and leader for our program and has embodies the Division III student-athlete model to the fullest."
A two-time captain of the wrestling team, a 2023 NCAA Division III All-American and five-time National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American, Peavey has distinguished himself athletically and academically as a University of Southern Maine student-athlete throughout his career. A two-time Albert D. Bean Jr. Leadership Award winner, Peavey returned to the Huskies' wrestling program for a fifth year and turned in an outstanding performance. A three-time All-Region wrestler in the 285-pound weight class, Peavey claimed the 2023 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship in his weight division with a perfect 4-0 mark, including a stunning 29-second pin in the championship match. With his regional title secured, Peavey earned his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship where he became the Huskies' sixth NCAA Division III All-American, placing sixth nationally.
A four-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete, Peavey was exceptional in his final season, posting a 27-4 record against his opponents, including 14 wins by fall. Capping his stellar career with the title of All-American, Peavey is a three-time All-New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) selection, earning first team honors in 2023. Over his final two seasons, Peavey was an outstanding 52-9 and finished his career as a Husky with a record of 87-32.
Named to the CSC Academic All-District team earlier this spring, Peavey was eligible for the Academic All-America ballot. Members of College Sports Communicators vote for student-athletes across NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA who have excelled academically and athletically. College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CSC sponsors Academic All-America® programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country.
