Mike Morin

A two-time NCAA Division III All-American during his wrestling career at the University of Southern Maine, Mike Morin '10, has taken the USM program to new heights since becoming head coach in 2015.  Over the past 10 seasons, Huskies' wrestling has crowned its first individual National Champion, and established program-bests at the Regional Championship with individual and team accolades, and earned its first but not last top 25 national ranking during the 2017-18. Remaining among the nation's top programs, Huskies' wrestling has placed in the top 20 at the NCAA tournament in 2017 (19th) and 2023 (18th),and in 2025 Southern Maine finished just outside of the top 20 at 21st. 

During his tenure, Morin has coached 33 regional place winners, 15 NCAA Division III National Championship qualifiers, seven NCAA Division III All-Americans and 25 National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans. 

During the 2024-2025 season, three Husky wrestlers earning All-Region honors in Jake Craig (125), Kyle Moore (141), and Colby Frost (149).  Both Craig and Frost earned their third bids to the NCAA Division III National Championship, and both athletes earned their second NCAA Division III All-American distinction, placing sixth at their respective weight classes.

In 2023-2024, Morin's Huskies ended the season on a program-record 10-match winning streak and three wrestlers placed at the regional tournament. Jake Criag and Colby Frost advanced to the National Championships where Frost placed sixth at 149 pounds to earn All-American status.

Morin coached three wrestling to All-Regions honors at the 2023 Northeast Regional Championships at Gorham's Costello Complex including heavyweight champion Jake Peavey. Peavey and Jake Craig earned spots in the National Championship tournament and each earned All-American honors. Craig placed fourth at 125 pounds and Peavey placed sixth at 285 pounds. 

In 2021-2022 two Huskies, senior Jake Peavey and Colby Frost, each earned a berth to the NCAA Division III National Championship. As a first-year, Frost became just the second USM freshman to earn a spot at nationals.  In addition to Peavey and Frost, three more Huskies earned NCAA Northeast All-Region Honors, including freshman Anthony Mears, sophomore Ethan Ford and graduate student Aidan Whitis.

In the Huskies' 2020 season, USM had a program-best six regional place winners as Peter Del Gallo, Brad Beaulieu, Zac Thompson, Raul Gierbolini, Jake Peavey and Josh Smith each earned NCAA All-Region honors.  Del Gallo and Beaulieu each placed second in their weight division to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship.  The bid marked Del Gallo's third consecutive bid to the NCAA National Championship, as he set out to repeat as an NCAA All-American.  However, Del Gallo and Beaulieu's championship bid was cut short due to the COVID-19  pandemic.  Both wrestlers were award National Wrestling Coaches' Association 2020 Division III All-American honors with Del Gallo being named a First Team All-American and Third Team All-American honors going to Beaulieu.

During the 2019 season, Morin and his staff had four regional place winners in Peter Del Gallo, Brendan Weir, Austin Shorey and Juan Vernaza.  Del Gallo went on to earn NCAA Division III All-American honors placing third in the nation at 125 pounds. 

Following the conclusion of the 2018 Northeast Regional Championship, Morin was selected as the Northeast Regional Tournament Coach of the Year.  Morin directed Southern Maine to its highest finish in the NCAA Division III Regional tournament, placing fifth with a team score of 88 points.  Along with the team finish, a program-best five Huskies wrestled their way into All-Region status, while two Southern Maine grapplers Austin Shorey  and Peter Del Gallo each earned a berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship. Both Del Gallo and Shorey earned NEWA Rookie of the Year honors respectively in 2017 and 2018. 

During the 2016-2017, Morin guided Dan Del Gallo to a Division III National Championship at 149-pounds.  Del Gallo's successful four-year career supplanted Morin in the all-time record books for career wins. 

Morin's team's have also excelled academically with Dan Del Gallo earning the NCAA's Elite 90 Award twice during his career, and becoming Southern Maine's first two-time first team CoSIDA Academic All-American.  Morin’s Huskies’ routinely earn academic honors from both the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) and the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA), and in 2024-2025 both Craig and Frost earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors, while 16 members of the team earned NEWA All-Academic Team honors.

Wrestling at 165-pounds for Southern Maine during his four-year career, Morin ended his career as one of the most decorated grappler's in school history.  Along with his two All-American honors (2009, 2010), Morin is a three-time NCAA Division III New England Champion, capturing the New England Wrestling Association title at 165 pounds consecutively from 2008-2010.  Morin is also a repeat NCAA Scholar All-American earning recognition for his solid work in the classroom as well in 2009 and 2010.   In his final season (2009-10), Morin earned the top ranking in New England for his weight class and was ranked number one in the country for a majority of the year.  Morin had a record of 43-5 at the conclusion of his senior season. He finished his remarkable career with an outstanding record of 133 wins and 21 losses for a winning percentage of .863 and was the first repeat USM All-American in program history.

Morin began his coaching career with the Huskies as an assistant coach during the 2010-11 season. He received the New England Wrestling Association Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2014-15.
