Huskies Edge Out Terriers for First Win of the Season

Box Score Waterville, Maine – Freshman Jakub Suran (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnasium Chomutov) won a thrilling match at sixth singles to clinch a non-conference win for the University of Southern Maine men's tennis team over the Thomas College Terriers on Wednesday evening. The meeting between the two teams was the second of the season. Today's win evens the series after Thomas won the first match 6-3 back in March. The Huskies improve to 1-6 on the season while Thomas drops to 10-6.
 
 The Terriers took two of the three doubles matches. At first doubles Jose Afonso and Liam Gould defeated junior Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Zac Howe (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) 8-3 and at second doubles Gabriel McPhail and Caleb Daigneault won 8-4 over junior Ethan Rudnicki (Levant, Maine/Hermon) and sophomore Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, QC, Canada/École Secondaire L'Odyssée. The Huskies picked up a point at third doubles when freshman Alex Lancaster (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland Christian) and senior Ryan Geary (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) defeated Kegan Rodrigue and Nick Magiera by a score of 8-5.
 
Ouellette earned his first win of the season at first singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Afonso. The Terriers won at second and third singles as McPhail defeated Desmarais 6-1, 7-5 and Gould beat Rudnicki 6-0, 7-5. At third singles Howe recorded his first win of the season with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Rodrigue. In the fourth singles match Lancaster defeated Daigneault 6-3, 6-3 to make the team scores tied at four points apiece.
 
Suran and Maigera battled to determine which team would win the match. The marathon showdown saw Suran take the first set 7-6 (8-6) before dropping the second set 6-4. Suran went on to win the third set 7-5 to give the Huskies their first win of the season and earn his first career victory. 
 
The next match for the Huskies will be against Western Connecticut State on Saturday morning at Gorham High School.
