Huskies Dominant – Defeat New England College 45-3

Southern Maine Has Five Wins By Fall in Match

HENNIKER, N.H.  –  Graduate student Aidan Whitis (Gorham, Maine), seniors Antoine Grace (Queensbury, N.Y.),  Juan Vernaza (Miramar, Fla./Somerset Academy) and Jeremy Sendrowski (Scarborough, Maine) and freshman Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) each earned a win by fall to highlight a dominant 45-3 win by the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the New England College Pilgrims Friday night.
 
With five wins by fall, Southern Maine earned its 10th dual meet win of the season and improved to 10-4 in head-to-head competition.
 
On the Mat:
  • Grace picked up the first of the Huskies' five pins putting Malik Kearsey to the mat in 2:00 at 125 pounds.  Sendrowski earned a 1:54 pin over his opponent at 157, Najee Hall, while Vernaza rumbled his way to a 2:19 win by fall at 174 pounds against New England College's Max Goldman. 
  • Whitis picked up the quickest win of the night, downing Maxwell Ross in just 43 seconds in the 184 pound bout, while Mears gutted out a 6:00 win by fall at 197 over Nate Philion.
  • Competing at 149 pounds, Husky freshman Colby Frost earned a huge 11-9 win by decision scoring vital points in the closing seconds of the third.  Seventh in the latest New England Wrestling Association individual ranking, Frost's win was a key one over the sixth ranked wrestler in the region Evan Fidelibus.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts Norwich University on Saturday (1:00 pm).  Prior to the match, the Huskies will honor their senior student-athletes.  Norwich is ranked ninth in the most recent NEWA Coaches' Poll, while the Huskies are picked 10th.
